Hubby arrived home very excited earlier this week. He’d picked up some genuine gossip during a visit to the supermarket and was dying to impart it. Usually we’re the very last to hear the local news but this lot was hot off the press.
The sleepy local town 5 kms from us is apparently a sink of iniquity. The gendarmes have arrested eleven of the place’s upstanding citizens for involvement in a drugs ring dealing in heroin, coke and cannabis. Local people are shaking their heads and blaming the town’s annual Jazz Festival for corrupting their sylvan paradise. They’re carefully ignoring the fact that the whole thing’s been going on for close on 11 years and the Jazz Festival’s a fairly new phenomenon. Drugs (particularly cannabis) are as much part of life in rural France as they are in rural England. There’s bugger all else to do for teenagers round here.
The guests continue to provide us with amusement. We had a South African family staying with us on Wednesday night, and hubby was chatting to one of the ladies the following morning. She had just been for a walk around our garden. She informed him that we had "an awful lot of slags". He just about managed to hold it together until he got into the kitchen then he collapsed in a laughing heap. I have to say the statement conjures up some wonderful pictures of ladies of questionable virtue lurking in the shrubbery rather than the rampaging molluscs she was actually referring to. Mind you, we do have a lady of slightly questionable virtue in our little hamlet in the shape of Mrs Next Door, a sultry bottle blonde who sometimes wanders on to their balcony of a morning in a very fetching pair of red silk pyjamas. Teenage male guests have been known to hang out of the window with their eyes popping out. All in all, we’re beginning to wonder if we’ve settled in a rather dodgy corner of semi-rural France.
If all that wasn’t enough excitement to be going on with my copy of Jasper Fforde’s latest, First Among Sequels, arrived this morning. Now all I have to do is fight hubby off and I can settle down to read it in peace.
