Missed appointments

I can't tell you how often the thought runs through my head, "There's something I'm supposed to be doing right now -- someone I need to meet or to call -- I've forgotten something at home that I said I would bring with me..." Just now I had the unsettling thought: What if these instances are cumulative? At some point in the future it will come to pass that all the times I've had this type of thought are converted into concrete missed appointments or opportunities or forgotten promises, I will be confronted with this abyss of past worry made real and called on to justify it.
Hey, unrelated but you ought to read Ted Chiang's short story "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate" -- it's really good and there is a lot to take away from it.
