Emily couldn't believe it when he started to stutter. He was always so eloquent and had words to describe even the most mundane things. How long has it been? Three months? Five? Yes, five. Three months spent trying to finish her studies to forget about him and two spent on trying to look for a job to forget about him. All in all, five months spent trying to forget about him.
And here he is now.
Here he is with that look of shock, his eyes wider than usual. It seemed awkward really to find him here in the first place. Of all places, actually. After all, she did move to be as far away as possible and now it seems that countries apart would never be enough.
"Hi." Emily greeted, unsure what to call him.
"Hi." He replied.
And they just stood there, awkwardly as groups of people with different nationalities passed by them.
She can still taste the bile in her mouth as she drank her fifth (or was it her seventh?) shot. Earlier that day, she met up with an old friend and for some unknown reason, the conversation turned towards a familiar face.
"You know him?" asked the friend while nonchalantly tapping her cigarette.
"Yes. An acquaintance of sorts." she lied while she followed her move, ashes touching the sidewalk.
"He's been sleeping around with some friends of mine." she continued, talking as if it was nothing new... as if this bit of information didn't ruin his character.
"Really?" that throbbing pain in her chest was there.
"Yeah." she replied while checking her mobile "Have to go. I'll catch you again sometime soon."
She could taste the bile rising in her mouth.
She was thinner now. So much thinner than before.
