AC360: 07/14/09

Tonight taurenova is *gasp* going to bed at a reasonable hour. ;) She has somewhere to be rather early in the day and can't stay up to play around with Anderson until then. So I am filling in!

Tonight (or at least part of it) is also part two of Anderson's interview with President Obama during the recent Ghana trip. CNN hates LJ, apparently, so I can't embed the video, but it is here and here.

1) Introducing the Obama interview. They met (among other places) in a castle where slaves were held and readied for sale and shipment.

Walk-and-talk! (ETA: Which is giving the cameramen a bit of a run for their money.)

Talking about the experience of being in the castle. Obama says you can "almost feel as if the walls can speak" (I think I remember this from last night) and how he explained it to Sasha and Malia. Trying to get them to imagine being both sides: slave and slave merchant. Part of getting them constantly ask themselves if they're treating people right in their own life.

Anderson asks how the experience of slavery should be talked about and remembered, Obama says it's important on how to teach it. Not just victim and victimizer, but implications like Darfur and the Congo where "the capacity for cruelty still exists" (Obama). Thinking about people being discriminated against for many things.

Talking about coming to Africa and getting a sense of things, "tapping into something very elemental" (Obama). Realizing both African and American sides. Realizing how American you are. Also, I just noticed Anderson is carrying ... something. That looks like ... a flag t-shirt? I have no idea. He keeps hiding it behind his back.

LIGHTNING ROUND. Or, well, a series of lightning questions in the limited time they had left.

Apparently an assistant hit his head on the helicopter (Reggie? He is ridiculously tall) and had to get stitches and another twisted his ankle. Watching the girls meet the Pope was interesting. Hee! Also, "As long as I've got you as a role model" -- Obama to Anderson on gray hair. Anderson giving Obama a locally-sold t-shirt (aha, this is what he was carrying) with his face on it. A keepsake but probably not something he'll wear ;)

2) Inside the Slave Trade. Talking about the horrible treatment that slaves received and a look inside the castle. (Shown to us by Casual!Andy.)

Going down tunnels into giant rooms where people would be packed in. Very scary. You get a sense of how incredibly dark it must've been, there's only a small hole for ventilation. No sanitation.

A look at the punishment cell where people were killed for trying to escape. Twenty to thirty people would be shoved into a completely windowless room to die. *shudder* Anderson points out that you can still see scratch and teeth marks on the walls and floors.

The female quarters. Maybe if you were pregnant you'd be allowed to leave but otherwise could be stuck in there for weeks or months.

The door of no return where people were taken to ships. Once you went through that door, you never set foot in Africa again. And a mention that some of Michelle's ancestors may have been in that castle.

3) Randi Kaye does the Bulletin. Sonia Sotomayor's hearing, escaped Indiana inmates remain at large and the manhunt called off today (third inmate was captured), Madoff moved to medium-security NC prison, Barack threw the first pitch at some game. Anderson glad he finally got to see the pitch actually being caught. (ETA: Second night Erica's been gone, but I can't remember the last week she had off, so.)

4) Aha, well, a tape that Anderson wanted to air is stuck in the editing room. They'll air it later. He looks displeased.

5) Probably because the only other thing they apparently have to talk about it MJ. New drama in the custody trial and confusion on *drifts off* Something about the coroner visiting the dermatologist.

Jim ... Moret, blah. And Jeffrey Toobin(?! -- he was doing Sotomayor earlier) analyze legal things surrounding drugs.

6) Following up on the police guy in Texas who steered money to his assistants they shouldn't have been getting. Or, a preview of following it up tomorrow, probably because of the mysteriously missing tape. Anderson is rather wtf about the case.

7) The Florida killing was part of a well-planned home invasion. Seven suspects. One photo can't be shown because he's a minor (though, as Shep told me earlier, he's been charged as an adult). Two of them have military backgrounds.

8) A closer look at the Billings couple. They had a few kids from previous marriages and adopted lots of children, many with special needs or from abusive homes. They had a security system to keep an eye on the kids (which I can imagine was useful if some of the kids were disabled). :( Three of their children have died in the past.

9) Randi does the second bulletin. Sarah Palin's op-ed in WaPo, the swim club that turned a minority daycare group away and invited them back only to be shot down (heck yes), Ensign running again in 2012, the Paris government is trying to get people to smile to be more friendly with tourists.

10) Anderson gets to do Beat 360! I will put the picture up later because I actually have it somewhere.

An intern won on the staff side. Rahm: Is that Anderson wanting to do ANOTHER interview? Let me talk to him.

Viewer: It's Berlusconi on the phone and he needs an alibi for last Friday.

11) The Shot is a plane ... crashing into a parked car in which a family of three was sitting. o_o But everyone including the pilot survived with just minor injuries. Anderson and Randi are O_O

politics, anderson cooper, potus obama, liveblogging, pictures, beat 360!
