An old joke: what is the difference between an optimist and a pessimist? A pessimist says, well, at least it cannot get any worse. An optimist says, oh yes, it can!
Not a lot went right this year, so in line with being an optimist and a mathematically inclined person*, I'll be thankful for all the things that could have gone wrong but did not.
*the number of things that have gone wrong in any given year is, by definition, finite. The things that could have but did not are infinite. Therefore, I win. Something, anyway.
