http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20079534/ I've been on that bridge more times than I can count. Both branches of I-35 run right through the middle of the Twin Cities. I know how packed it gets in the middle of rush hour. My mother's up in Minnesota right now; fortunately, she wasn't trying to get to the airport today.
Tens of billions of dollars every month goes to fund the war effort. At the same time, 26% of the highway bridges in this country need serious maintenance, but no money can be 'found' to get it done. From what I've read about this bridge in particular, it was built back in 1967. An inspector report from 2006 noted weakened, bending girders and fatigue cracks. There was construction work going on at the time of the collapse, but it only entailed resurfacing of the road, no actual shoring up of the bridge's support structure. This makes me absolutely sick.
