Election Blues (Good ones!)

Well, it seems the American public is finally starting to wake up. Thank whatever deity you happen to believe in. The House is already back under Democrat control, and in the two Senate races they need to win, the Dem candidates are in the (slim) lead.

The ironic thing is, back in 1994 when the Republicans had their little revolution, I was very much a Republican myself. Now that the Democrats are forcing a reversal at last, I'm cheering them on. Strange how times change, isn't it?

To some degree this is a result of my views on the world changing. Such is inevitable as one grows up and experiences the world. However, I place a hefty part of the blame on the shoulders of the Republican party itself. It no longer stands for the ideals it once did. Now it's the big government/big spending party, filled with people who want to establish a national religion and put limits on freedom. Those are concepts I've never agreed with, and I doubt I ever will.

And as an aside... goddammit, Minnesota, when did you turn into a fracking Red State?! Did all the Democratic voters start staying home after Ventura got elected? Ever since then, you keep voting in Republicans as Governor! I understand that "Republican" has traditionally meant "conservative Democrat by any other name" up there, but Christ, your "conservative Midwestern values" have nothing to do with what the Republicans are about anymore!

To be fair, this seems to happen mostly because we don't have a runoff proceedure in place, and we've always got a third-party "spoiler" candidate around. But seriously, you guys came less than 4% of votes from giving Minnesota's electoral votes to Bush in 2004, which would have been the first time Minnesota had gone for a Republican presidential candidate since Hoover (and we all know how that turned out).

At least the voters in Minnesota House District 1 got wise and voted out the incumbent Republican, who had been voted in to begin with during the 1994 Republican revolution. Go bottom of the boot voters!
