The Hunger Games, True Grit and the rest of my week

So I guess the first thing I really want to talk about is the casting of Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games film adaption. I've been basically complaining and whining about it all week, but I still can't get over just how much this upsets me. Jennifer Lawrence is a very talented actress, this I know for sure, but she simply isn't suitable for Katniss. Katniss isn't white, and having a white person being cast just infuriates me to no end. Katniss, and the rest of the Seam, aren't white like those of a merchant class for a reason. It wasn't just a ~funny coincidence~, and now that important aspect of the books has been completely taken out of the film. Another thing that is peeving me is the 'fans' responses. Firstly, there was the whole thing where what I felt a majority of the fans were against the whitewashing of the main character and wanted an actress that actually fit the physical description, but once Hunter Parrish was being considered for Peeta all of this fell out the window. I'm sorry, but why is it more important to fit the main character casting around who is being cast as her love interest? Why is it more important who should be cast as Peeta rather than the main character herself? Why should whitewashing be appropriate as long as their is some hunkable man? It just baffles me. They could EASILY find someone else to play Peeta besides Hunter Parrish who is a more approriate age to someone who is MORE appropriate to the role of Katniss, like Hailee Steinfeld (who was my first choice, and still is, for Ms. Katniss Everdeen).

Besides the whitewashing, there is the whole issue of age. Jennifer Lawrence is 20, and at least to me she does not convince me that she could play a 16 year old girl. Just how there was a reason Katniss and the rest of the Seam weren't white, there is also a reason why the people who participate in the Hunger Games are children. Casting an adult is going to once again completely take away from the original point of the story and the effect it is supposed to have on the reader. I've been looking at edits of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss and I simply can't see it, and I don't think I will go see the movie now just because I know that it has the potential to completely ruin the whole franchise for me.

Besides The Hunger Games mess, I also went to see True Grit this weekend and I thought it was wonderful. Hailee Steinfeld was absolutely phenomenal in it and she completely stole the show. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon were also wonderful in the film, and I loved the dynamic and the relationship between all three of the characters. The ending made me cry. :'(
