a happy birthday

the other day was meg's birthday. so i brought her cake.

i wanted to get her the strawberry one but it wasn't available. i got her a pretty heart-shaped Tous Les Jours cake instead, and she said it's perfect, for more good vibes on her love life. :)

meg is one of my oldest friends--met her for the first time when i was five, we were in prep. i have this vague memory of meg with long hair split in the middle, pinned to the sides, sitting on a yellow table, one of her arms in a cast. she's holding a crayon and is so absorbed in finishing her coloring--i think it was a fish, and she was coloring it yellow green.

or maybe i'm just making it up. ;)

what is true, though, is she's one of my best friends. honestly, i have a lot. which is why i avoid using the term "best friend" because it seems unfair to all the other people i'm friends with--they're all the best at at least one thing! but meg's "the best" at so many.

meg's my go-to person when i want to rant, when i'm feeling emotional. because she's emotional as well and she knows how to empathize, but she will always look at both sides of the story. she's very much like me.

in fact, when we were in grade school, we sort of looked the same--we both had shoulder-length straight black hair with bangs, which we cut ourselves in the corner restroom. that was stupid, and that was fun. i'm also pretty sure i looked stupid after, but i didn't care because i had the same hair as meg.

in high school, one of the new students thougt meg and i were one person. i've always thought she's beautiful and i secretly wanted to look like her.

i think meg is one of the people who knows me best. i'd like to think i'm pretty self-aware, but sometimes meg would tell me things about me that even i myself don't notice.

i told her once about how i gauge my degree of comfort with another person--when i'm able to sing my favorite songs around that person, that's the sign. when my high school friends and i go out, i always bring meg home, and as always i'd have music on, and i would often sing.

probably the best thing about meg is her laugh. she can tell a good story, a funny story, sure, but you don't even have to know how the story ends--she'd just laugh, and you just feel you have absolutely no choice but to laugh with her. when meg is around, there is always laughter, and lots of it. if you have one friend who can always make you laugh, i think you already have most of what you really need to get through life. :)

(doesn't she look so cute, like she's talking to her cake?)

so meg knows i don't like being cheesy, but okay, i <3 you meg. :) this one's for you. happy birthday, again! let's do that BB spree tomorrow! i'm so excited :)

P.S. I got Meg's cake from Tous Les Jours, a French-Korean bakery at the ground level, near Hypermart entrance at SM North The Block. Creative cakes and healthy, tasty bread, all freshly made everyday. :)

tlj, birthday, tous les jours, meg
