Well, I've been a literature student for nearly a year now, and I am finally coming to grips with what literary analysis is.
...you look at a story and find as many elements of sex, incest, Oedipal Complexes, and personal preferences (being gay or not).
Take Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", for example. Most of my people at least know the opening, thanks to "The Producers" ("'Gregor Samsa awoke to find himself transformed into a giant cockroach'...nah...too good."), and although that's not word-perfect...well, let's just go with that. In this story we find elements of incest and Oedipus Complexes, and the desire for virility. The father standing tall and erect evokes the image of a phallus standing up for patriarchal order, blah blah....Gregor wants to sleep with his mother AND his sister, apparently...and he copulates with a picture on the wall.
...I'm a little confused. He's a giant bug. Moreover, he's a giant bug trying to preserve his sanity and humanity. The synopsis is as follows (if any of you want to read it, there are spoilers.) Gregor Wakes up as a bug. At first his family is sympathetic and tries to cope with this horrid transformation. As time goes on, the family becomes desperate for money since Gregor was their means of support. So they all get jobs and get grumpy with Gregor, abusing him, resenting him, and injuring him several times. Finally Gregor dies as a result of neglect, and a rotten apple crunched into his thorax. The family is like, "Oh thank GOD that's over! Yaaaaaay!" and goes out for a picnic. The parents look at their daughter and are like, "Hey, she's hawt. We needs to get her a husband. (Read subtext by me, "Hey, let's get someone else to sponge off of!")" The End.
I don't know. I suppose you can view some of that as incestuous, like a time when Gregor wants to keep her with him in his room, guarding her from intruders, etc...but really, I just took that as Gregor trying to preserve his little sister's gentleness. As for the rest of it, it's all about parasitism and role reversal, for me. But apparently, it's all about sex, sex, sex! Yay, sex. -_-;
By the by, if you read all that, thank you! You're so nice to me. T-T Pls leave comments! Yay comments!!
