A few days later, waiting on Carlisle’s desk was an unadorned wooden box. Nothing remarkable about it - except that is was positioned in the very center of the desk, on top of all other things, making it the most noticeable thing one saw on nearing the desk or sitting at it.
A simple unadorned box which opened first on a scrap of paper, with a singular line in well know script;
I need to fix this.
Beneath it lay a single, well worn, leather bracer, with the Cullen crest and a jagged tear.

Edward, the curved perfect stillness of him, sat at Carlisle’s desk.
One hand over his face, his first fingers pinching the bridge of his nose, other fingers splayed across his cheeks and his mouth. His eyes were squeezed as tightly closed as possible. While his second hand was pinned, like claws stopped right before rending, a cage of long, white, tense fingers creating a cage over a paper which bore two words -
