Survival is my middle name! Can you believe I made it throught the first day of classes! Hurray! It actually wasnt that hard. Whats really going to suck is my 8oclock tomorrow morning! Yuck!
Well my day started off pretty funny, as I was leaving the dorm room today to go to class, I asked a very unconsious Chris if he wanted me to lock the door on the way out. The funny part is that Im quite sure he did NOT reply in a language that I am familar with. This seems a little cliche, but it wasnt just a 1 second grumble, this was like a 5 second ramble in a language that I am sure is not english! Either way, it left me with a chuckle as I left for class.
I love Grapefruit Juice, just incase you were curious. For breakfast I just ran through a short line and grabbed a 'nanner, special K bar, and a bottle of Grapefruit Juice. There are two things that make me really really excited about this campus's food services. Grapefruit Juice, and the fact that to pay for all of my food - ALL I HAVE TO DO IS SWIPE A CARD! Thats almost as dangerous as a credit card. This is just easier because I pre-pay, not post-pay. I have already spent a lot of money on food here. Uhg! I wish everything worked this way. There is this resteraunt down here called Pot Bellies. MmmMmm, good sandwiches!
Speaking of spending money. Last night, Toph, Shima and myself were chillin' in Jill and Val's room playing some smash bro's and we were talking about how it would be nice to get an Xbox. Simply for games like Halo 2 and Fable and what not. Well Jill being the e-bay fiend that she is, she hops on her computer and dials up her favorite url and soon enought we are looking at used prices for xboxes. We found a couple of cool deals for an Xbox and a couple of controls with a couple of games and stuff all in a bundle. Not bad prices either. All of a sudden we found an xbox deal finishing in 20 minutes with 2 controllers and 7 games, namely Halo, Halo 2, Fable, Dark Aliance I & II and a couple others. When we looked at the price at $180 we couldnt believe our eyes! I quickly made value judgements on my life and realized I think I am going to go for it. Chris and Shima where willing to go down on part of it and by this moment I was experiencing one of those rushes that you get when you see a good deal coming your way. We place our bet and realized that we were entering a battle zone with us and another very excited customer. I gave in and we begun to battle. Man, for a while there I lost all control of my reasoning abilities and was determined to win. Luckily Jill reminded me that I only have no more than 10 hours at my new job up here and convinced me to fight stratigically. Not to easily on my concious the battle got up to $203 and finally we decided to chill it out for a while, just to wait and spite the other buyer at the last moment. With 28 seconds and no fingernails left we placed a bid for $216 and the longest 10 seconds later I was the very very proud owner of an Xbox and some pimpin games. I woke up this morning and felt amazing about my life!
The Xbox decision came at the righ time too, we just got our futon up in our room and now we are ready for having people over to crash or play games all night.
My classes seem pretty cool and all my teachers seem awesome so far. I will more than likely tell you about all of them later but the one teacher that sticks out in my mind is my Politics Prof. Now when you enter a class entitled the Politics of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, you start to worry, specially if you are not a stellar student like me or just a logical human being! What really starts to rack your nerves is when the Prof's name is Jamal Nassar. I have had bad experiences with teachers from another country, mainly Prema Dua who was my very small, indian, Soc teacher at ICC. But Dr. Nassar is a completely different story. This guy has integrity and humor and he just seems like an awesome person. He started off class telling us that he finds it offencive when people call him the foreigner teacher. He said, "I came over to this country in 1966, how many of you were born in 1966?" With a college class with most people that werent even born before 1980, no one raised thier hands. He then called us the foreigners. I though that was an amazing point. This guy is a Doctor in Politcal Sceince. He is also the Head of the Politics Department. On top of all that, the book we are using was published by him and is also used in over 300 Colleges IN THE WORLD! He also started us out with another point. Claiming that this is not the right class for anyone who has too much patriotism, we were talking about some of the lies and misconceptions that people may have about the US and what some of these other countries think about us. With that in our heads he asked how many of us have questioned God? After that he asked how many of us have questioned CNN or the New York Times. This isnt a class full of stuck up punk rockers that think Anarcy is the only policy, or a bunch of political snobs with their comments about the current political possition. Instead he wants the class to have an amtosphere of questioning and perseption of US from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Through out your whole education, when you have a class on culture or humanities, more than likely its European or American, Im really excited to learn about these other countries and their veiws.
I love the fact that a lot of my classes are in the invironment that I have always thought of as collegesque. ICC's little rooms and only one lecture hall just wasnt cutting it with thier cement quad and only one building. 3 of my classes today where held in Large lecture halls, TWO of those where actually held in Theaters. Yes, with balconys and all. Take the size of Central's Auditorium or maybe a Theater in the late Landmark cinema's, thats what Im talking about. with a quad that is beautiful and green with trees and bolders.
One of the Ice Breakers in class today was "If you were one Ice cream flavor, what would you be? Then, WHY?" WOW! we had a lot of Rocky Road kids and a couple of Chocolate Chip Cookie Doe, even some plain vanilla kids. I decided I was Chocolate Rasberry, Creative and Imaginative, Unique, Smooth, Sweet and yet Classic and simple. But i couldnt believe what an amazing question that was. I have never seen that one before!
All in all, after the first amazing day at college, things couldnt have been better and I am so excited that every thing is falling in line and working out wonderfully.
Love
