And still nothing has occurred at the "Ground Zero" site other than memorials for the past six.
Yes, those memorials are genuine and speak to the memory of those who died and gave their lives that day for the safety of others, but where are we?
We're nowhere. Nothing has happened. Nothing has changed and it's still a hole in the ground, which is a hole in our soul. I feel that one of biggest mistakes we've made as a nation is not rebuilding them, five stories higher even. It irritates me to no end that they haven't been built back. We could've done it by now. Those offices would be full. It would be a source of pride for every American, every New Yorker and a sign to the world that no matter how hard we're hit, we'll rise again.
What are we doing? Nothing. Hemming and hawing over the details of something that won't be built for another seven years more than likely. Choosing an ugly design that pays no real tribute to those that lost their lives there that day.
This is a fitting memorial and what they deserve.
It's a damn shame that the ground wasn't broken as soon as all the rubble was cleared, because it was the first thing that went through my head.
Build them back. Taller. Stronger.
