George had been the one to convince Grace to sign up for the online dating service, shortly after her divorce had been finalized. Mainly, he thought it would be a good distraction for her since the dating site offered an assortment of chat rooms on a variety of things. The chat room on the sites main objection was for interaction, and not necessarily hooking people up.
It was in one of these chat rooms entitled “Classical Music Lovers,” where she had met renaissanceman288, whose real name he told her was Jack. Grace and Jack talked in the chat room for several months, which led to an email relationship and then several months later a phone relationship. Finally, feeling bold one day, Grace suggested that they meet one afternoon for lunch.
They agreed to meet two afternoons after the phone call at a small café close to where Grace worked, just in case she got called back to work suddenly. Since they were both uneasy about sending photos over the internet, Jack suggested that they both wear a blue rose.
Grace was nervous as she walked the short distance to the café, the blue rose she had purchased earlier bobby pinned in her hair on the left side. This morning she had carefully taken all the thorns off and made sure that it was in a position in her hair where it wouldn’t move. She had checked right before she left, and by some miracle it hadn’t moved a millimeter all day, even though she had ended up having to move around some things around the lab unexpectedly.
Grace had always worn a black print skirt and a black shirt today, since there were no autopsies that she knew of. She hoped Jack liked what she was wearing, she was a little nervous.
The bell jangled merrily, as Grace pushed the door open. A few people were scattered about the ten or so tables.
The first person Grace noticed was a refined blond man with a designer suit. He was wearing a black tie with a blue pattern interlaced, which she couldn’t quite see. He was taking a sip from a china tea cup, and he had movie star handsomeness. Grace wondered if that was who she was supposed to meet, but she couldn’t see his button hole. The refined gentleman was probably not who she was here to see, she wasn’t that lucky.
She scanned over the rest of the people. Maybe it was the man in the badly fitted business suit, or the man with the polo shirt and blue jeans. Maybe it would just be her luck for it to be the man in the corner eating a garlic bagel. It couldn’t be the refined gentleman. The man in question must be one of the other three, since why else would someone that handsome not send a photo online. Oh, course, she had choose not to do it either, so maybe it was her own fault if she ended up with someone not as handsome as the tea drinker.
Grace was about to do a second pass over the people to look for the blue rose, when she noticed the refined gentleman had started to walk towards her. She noticed he had a blue rose in his boutonnière, and also as he got closer the intricate pattern in his tie was blue roses.
The man gave her a sweet smile, “You must be Grace. You are a vision of loveliness.” He gave her a soft kiss on the cheek.
“Thank you Jack, you are quite handsome yourself.” A soft blush formed on her cheeks, she wasn’t sure how she had managed to luck out.
“Thank you,” He said softly. He took her hand and led her to the table where he had been sitting. Jack pulled out her chair, and waited before she was seated before he sat.
The waitress came over and took their drink orders, more tea for him and a diet coke for her.
“I got here earlier than I thought; I hope you don’t mind I ordered tea while I waited.” He gave her an apologetic smile.
Grace laughed slightly, “That’s okay. I don’t mind. What kind of tea are you drinking?”
“It’s Earl Grey; I developed a taste for it when I spent a semester in London while at graduate school.” He gave her a soft smile, projecting an image of someone who may have more money than most, but not one of a snob who bashes people over the head with the fact they have money.
Though Grace had just met him face to face, she liked the meeting that she had known him forever. Jack seemed totally different than Morgan, which was something she definitely needed right now. She had been nervous earlier, but she was glad that she decided they should meet in person. “I have heard many wonderful things about London, but does it have the character of New York or Miami?” She asked, half joking.
He chuckled. “I think each of these cities has its own character.”
She smiled.
The waitress brought them their drinks, and asked if they needed a minute to decide what to order.
Jack and Grace shared a laugh as they both looked over their menus quickly. They both decided to order the chicken cease salad.
The waitress wrote the number down, and headed back into the kitchen.
Grace found herself laughing after a moment, “It feels like I have known you forever, yet I am not sure what we should talk about.”
Jack chuckled softly, “I know what you mean. I was nervous when I first saw you, you took my breath away. I wasn’t sure if I was lucky enough for you to be the one I have been talking to so long.”
“I know what you mean,” They shared a smile.
Grace was about to say something else, when her cell phone went off. “Excuse me a moment,” she said. She took the call in the bathroom. She came back a few seconds later. “I have to go back to work,” She told him a bit disappointed.
She picked up her purse, and was about to leave some money.
He held up a hand politely, “I’ll cover it, if you promise that we can have a rain check.” He got up from his chair.
“I’d like that.”
He walked around the table, and gave her a kiss on the cheek and a small hug. “I’ll look forward to it then.”
Grace smiled. As she walked back to the VCTF, she felt like she was floating.
