The sun was setting causing the sky to turn shades of Pink. Pacey Witter laid down on the bow of his boat watching the sky. It was weird to think how easily he had been able to fix it up and turn it into a beauty. And he knew in a few weeks that he would be sailing away, off to places unknown and adventures outside of Capeside. He was glad to be going away from his crazy family.
A shadow fell over his legs, and he looked up seeing only a blue uniform, and knew at once that it was either his brother or his dad. He hoped that they would just go away, if he didn’t look up at them, and make actual eye contact. Maybe he could pretend that he was sleeping.
“Hey Little Brother.” Doug Witter called. He had had a long day, and had just been stood up for a date, when he had gone for a walk. He had seen his brother on his boat, figuring that Pacey was hiding from Kerry and her monsters that had seemed to take up permanent resident with their parents. Doug had thought about just walking by, but he was feeling a bit like talking to any sort of human, and not have to go home to his empty, lonely apartment. Doug was starting to wonder if maybe trying to talk to Pace had been a bad idea, especially if Pace decided to ignore him. Doug got ignored enough without Pacey doing it. He was about to walk up, when Pacey said.
“What’s up?” Pacey didn’t move from his position. “Pull up a seat.” Pacey figured his brother didn’t seem to be going away; he might pretend to be nice. And Doug and he had gotten a bit more closer since Pacey this year, as Pacey realized a lot of the golden son/brother ritual was a bit of an act for dad, and that maybe their father tortured them both the same.
Doug found a spot, where Pacey couldn’t kick him, but was also not in the water. He didn’t feel like wading in. “Not much. So, are you out here brooding?”
“Are you out here brooding?” Pacey mimicked more in the way to say he was asking the same question, and less mocking. He wanted to see how Doug was going to answer, before he did so he would know which direction this conversation was going to go. He was definitely not in the mood for one of Doug’s lectures.
“Maybe.” Doug answered nonchalantly.
“If you’re going to answer that way, don’t expect me to answer you.” Pacey glanced over at his brother, and wondered if Doug knew he had fallen into one of those moody trances he gets in when he thinks no one is looking.
“Suit yourself.” Doug watched the water. He didn’t feel like starting a fight with Pacey. It had been a long day.
Doug’s remark made Pacey sit up. “So, what’s going on with you?” Pacey took all traces of snarkiness out of his voice. He hoped that his tone was sympathetic, because his brother wasn’t looking at his face to know he was.
“Just a long day, and on top of that, I got stood up.” Doug glanced sideways at Pacey.
Pacey felt his mind protesting telling him to be serious, but he heard the word “Rupert?” slip out of his mouth.
Doug didn’t even say anything just got up; he wasn’t for the mood for any cracks on his sexuality. Especially since the truth was Rupert and he had been friends for a long time before their fight three months ago, and he hadn’t talked to him since.
“I was just teasing, I’m sorry.” Pacey touched his arm slightly. He didn’t know what to do, seeing Doug not act angrily but actually act kind of sulky. And Pacey wasn’t sure what to do about it. He had heard a rumor lately that their father had threatened to fire Doug over something small, and Pacey knew he should probably try to be a little nice, especially if Doug was doing a lot worse at work than he thought. “Are you okay; you seem really weird and angsty today? Is it because of the rumor I heard where dad said he was going to fire you?”
Doug almost chuckled as he sat back down on the edge of the boat. “No, Dad does that every couple of years, he thinks it motivates me. It actually just annoys me. And anyway, I had a date with a girl named Anna.”
“Wait the hot one down at the convenience store?”
“Yeah, we were supposed to meet after work, but she never showed up. I guess I must have really messed our first date up last week.”
Doug voice was neutral, and Pacey couldn’t tell if he was sad about this or what. Pacey couldn’t believe he had misjudged Doug like that, he did think Doug liked girls occasionally, but never actually saw him asking someone extremely hot out, he saw Doug going more for the quiet types.
“That sucks… I am sure there are other fish in the sea.”
Doug shrugged. “Probably not.” Doug didn’t want to admit to Pacey, that he wasn’t the ladies man like Pacey. Doug found it hard sometimes to talk to girls, even in high school when he had been on both the track team and the football team, and considered slightly possible. Doug figured if he left it at only probably not, Pacey didn’t have room for another gay joke. Doug really didn’t want to hear it, especially since he had always thought of himself as bisexual, but it was hard to say the word out loud when everyone in town seemed to project their image of what he should be on him.
Doug had actually been thinking of coming out, but then had saw what had happened to Pacey’s friend Jack, and realized that this town would never understand anything that could be considered an alternative lifestyle. This was one of the reasons that Doug hated the gay jokes, because Pacey didn’t realize if the wrong person found out, Doug could really lose his job, and not just be given an empty threat by their father who thought he was doing the best thing.
Doug’s beeper went off. Doug turned it off without evening looking at it. “I have to go back to work. I’ll catch you later.”
“Later.” Pacey watched Doug leave, and then laid back on the boat.
