“Do you want to see a movie later?” Ballard mouthed across the room, when Ivy wasn’t looking. He had really come in here to ask Ivy and Topher more questions about the engagements but he couldn’t help flirting every time Ivy wasn’t carefully scrutinizing what he was doing.

“We shall see.” Topher managed to say both softly, and without moving his lips.

Ivy had turned from what she was doing, and was hovering near Topher again.

Topher gave Ballard a professional smile. “So you think you understand the shorthand for the engagements now?”

Ballard nodded, leaning more against the table he was standing against. “Tonight’s engagement is designated R, which means it is a lonely hearts engagement. So Echo will hook up with this guy, and we can call it a night.” He deliberately said it playfully. Even though he had an attraction for Topher, he found himself uncomfortable sometimes to think of Echo (or rather Caroline) hooking up with anyone.

Topher chuckled softly. He reached into a desk drawer and pulled out a bag of chips. “For the star student.”

Ballard caught it perfectly. He opened the bag, and pulled out a chip carefully. He ate in one bite. Even though, he still wanted to take out the Rossum Corporation, he also needed to learn everything he could about being a handler.

There was no reason for him to slack on the job. Echo, also seemed to be one of the actives who, was most likely to get in trouble. It was his job to protect her no matter what, and he was not just going to screw it up. He needed to learn everything he could to perform his job.

Ivy handed several clipboards to Topher to check information on. She seemed a bit unnerved, and more than usual today, she seemed to be glaring at Ballard. He had sensed that she was in love with Topher, and he had always respected that by flirting with him when she wasn’t looking or was not in the room.

“Will you get me some juice boxes, Ivy?” Topher said in a tone that was more of a demand than a question.

“Yes, Topher.” She scurried off quickly.

Topher wheeled his chair over to Ballard. “If I didn’t have so much work to do, I would drag you into my room.” He pulled Ballard playfully towards him as if he was going to kiss him, but let him go before he pulled Ballard all the way down.

Ballard waited until he had wheeled back to his computer. They had only really made out several times, but for now, it seemed enough. Whatever they might be missing they seemed to fill in the gap with very unprofessional sexual advances when no one was around.

Ballard ate another chip. “Ivy seems in a bit of a huff. What did you do to her now?” He taunted.

Topher chuckled. “I think she thought you hated me, since you usually have questions when I am not here. She thought you didn’t like my lack of morals, and thought you were a much better person morally and because of that would never talk to me if you didn’t have to.”

Ballard slowly pulled out another chip, and ate it. “I am supposed she never figure out you were the one mainly avoiding me.” Topher had already told him this a few weeks ago.

“I wonder if Ivy notices much.” Topher chuckled and began typing on the computer.

Ballard waited for a brief second when Topher looked up at him, and sent him a random wink.

Topher looked away quickly, trying hard not to let a blush come on his face.

Ballard knew the effect his winks had on Topher, and knew it was taking a lot of Topher’s concentration not to come across the room, and rip his clothes off.

“Are you prepared for the engagement tonight?” Topher asked, trying to still be professional. He finished the widget he was working on, and sent the information so it could imprint.

“It is a repeat engagement. This guy pays once a month each time with a different active.” Ballard gave a grin, and made another deliberate wink.

Topher looked just about to open the pocket door to his room, and shove Ballard inside when they heard footsteps on the stairs. While it was just Boyd Langton going to talk to Dewitt about something, Topher frowned.

Ballard set the bag of chips on the table, and crossed the room with two quick steps. He ruffled Topher’s hair playfully. He bent down close enough where he could whisper in Topher’s ear. “In three hours, I can deal with you and your man reaction.”

He walked back across the room, and scooped up the bag of chips. He made sure to wink at Topher before he left the office.

He knew Topher had laid his head against the table in frustration, but would be back to work by the time Ivy came back in the room.
