Author’s notes:

Carlton Lassiter starred up at his cracked ceiling. With a hard blink, he pulled himself into a sitting position.

He wasn’t sure what time it was, and though he could glance at either the Felix the cat clock on the wall, or the digital alarm clock on the night stand; he didn’t feel like looking at either. He would probably find out that only ten minutes had passed since he last checked.

For some reason, he hadn’t been able to get any sleep for the last three nights. He was starting to slowly lose his mind.

Carlton slipped his feet into a pair of warm, fuzzy, blue slippers and padded through his apartment. He walked into the kitchen, opening the fridge. He had thought he had some left over pizza. He didn’t see it though.

He moved around a couple of Chinese takeout containers, and the almost empty gallon of milk, and found the missing slices in a plastic storage bag. He had forgotten he had put them in there. He pulled the bag out, and opened it. He sat down at the kitchen island, and absentmindedly, started to chew on the first piece.

Carlton had left the current case file spread out on the counter, and he went through all the paperwork again, making sure not to get any grease on anything.

He put the slice of pizza on top of the plastic bag. He got up, and pulled a bottle of root beer out of the fridge. He twisted off the top, and took a long sip.

This case was part of the reason that Carlton felt he was going crazy; every time he was sure he got a break, the fake Psychic Spencer seemed to have it already. Carlton wondered when he was going to get a break in life, and be back to his former glory status again. He didn’t like feeling like he was slipping up at his job.
