Henry gave a half-hearted smile to Mike Celluci, who sat on the other couch. He didn’t know what to say, they were both pretending nothing had changed between them.
Mike was pretending he hadn’t walked in on Vicki and Henry kissing. Henry was pretending he hadn’t known the instant that Mike had come into Vicki’s office during the kiss.
Mike gave Henry a very strained smile. He didn’t really want to be sitting in the same room with Fitzroy as they waited for Vicki. Fitzroy always had a way of making Mike feel uncomfortable in his own skin. Mike crossed his left leg over his right knee. He drummed his fingers against the arm of the couch.
Henry watched Mike for another moment, before he turned his gaze to the doorway. He was sure Mike was plotting all kinds of vengeful things to do to him. Henry in the beginning had seen Mike only as his competition for Vicki’s affections, but the detective really wasn’t a bad guy. Maybe if they both didn’t like the same woman, they could have been friends.
The door opened and both men tried not to rush to a standing position as Vicki came into the office. Neither one wanted to seem like waiting had been a bit unnerving.
