They had been stuck at the airport for three hours, during which time the bartender had made everyone sandwiches before he and the waitress disappeared into the back to do their homework. The bartender had set a bell on the counter, and told them to ring it if they needed anything.
Bailey had ordered a bottle of soda pop, and two cups of ice before the bartender had left. He poured himself another cup of the beverage, trying to counteract the effects of the headache he was feeling from the so-called peach margaritas that they had had three of earlier. Bailey set the 2 litter back on the table, and pulled a Swiss Army knife from his pocket. “Let me see your watch, maybe I can fix it.”
Grace laughed. She had definitely not expected that, they had been talking about old movies for the longest time. “Can you fix it?”
“Well, I won’t break it any farther at least.” Bailey chuckled, taking a sip of his drink.
Grace picked her purse up, and set it on the table. The watch had fallen to the bottom of the purse, and she dug it out carefully, making sure nothing spilled on the table. She handed the watch to Bailey, and put the purse back on the floor.
Bailey looked at the watch, examining it. “So, I heard there was an opening for the Chief Medical Examiner of Macon County in a few months. Did you want me to send you a recommendation?”
Grace blinked hard; she hadn’t realized that Bailey had been looking for new jobs for all of them. “I don’t know,” She answered truthfully. She really hadn’t decided where she wanted to be in six months, every time she started to think about it, it made her deeply sad. She hated that they were all being forced to leave the VCTF; it was almost like her extended family.
“Well, you could probably go anywhere you wanted. You’re extremely talented honey.” He began to unscrew the back of his watch with a screwdriver attachment on the knife.
Grace found herself blushing, more from the fact that she called her honey. It sounded nice coming from him. “Thank you.”
Bailey peered inside the watch. “Well, if you decide you want the job, let me know.”
Grace nodded, taking a sip of her drink. She watched as Bailey pondered over the watch. Now as she was seeing it, it didn’t surprise her at all that Bailey might actually be able to fix it. He was talented in so many things. She wondered how he was in bed, and then pushed the thought away. “I’ll let you know.” She forced herself to say in a normal voice.
Grace had been thinking about Bailey in a romantic way a lot lately, maybe she always had. She had just been too scared to approach him because she wasn’t sure if she was ready to be in a relationship after what had happened between her and Morgan. Everything in the beginning had almost seemed perfect, and in the end it was chaos.
Bailey took the battery out of her watch, and then bent down closer to the watch, doing something Grace couldn’t see. “You know it’s weird to think in six months that my FBI career is going to be over.” He changed attachments on the knife and kept working.
Grace patted Bailey’s knee under the table. “You’ve had a good run, babe. It’s a shame a congresswoman decided to bash us all like this.”
“It’s the way people play politics. They don’t seem to realize it is how to balance people demanding quick justice, and budget cuts.” He popped the battery back in, and reset the time.
“I hear you.” Grace took another sip of her drink.
Bailey picked up her other wrist, and put her watch back on lovingly. “All fixed. The glass is cracked, but it runs.”
She gave him a big smile. “Thanks.”
Bailey laughed, “Got to cover John and his clumsiness for at least the next four months. “
“I am sure you will be glad when it is Rachel’s responsibility.”
Bailey chuckled. It was hard to think that John and Rachel would be getting married soon. He didn’t see either as the type to actually go through with the ceremony.
“Me, and George have a bet going to see who will get cold feet first,” Grace chuckled.
“I may want to add to that later.” Bailey smiled. He had been thinking for the last few hours, how beautiful she looked in this light. But she always looked beautiful; she had away of melting his heart sometimes. He wasn’t sure how long he had been in love with her, but he had been scolding himself for months for not asking her out, it never seemed the right time though. Bailey took a long sip of his drink; he should just get it over with. “When we get back to Atlanta, would you like to have dinner with me?”
Grace tilted her head at him, “Are you asking me out on a date, Bailey Malone?” She arched her eyebrows playfully.
“Yes,” He said seriously, he almost added something about he would understand if she didn’t want to date a dilapidated FBI man but forced the thought out of his head. He usually wasn’t one for self-pity, but the VCTF closing had caused him to be in a mopey mood. And Bailey definitely didn’t want Grace to accept his offer out of pity.
Grace moved her barstool closer, “I’ve been wondering when you would ask.” She leaned over and kissed him on the lips.
“I guess that is a yes,” Bailey teased as the kiss broke, and then pulled her into a deeper kiss.
