x-posted to Bookshare community:
I just posted about "The Road" and it reminded me of something I've been wanting to post here for awhile.
I read "Eat, Pray, Love" back before Oprah gave it cult like status. Now that the movie is coming out, I'm debating about whether or not to see it. "EPL" was very intimate to me, almost private and biographical. The last book I read that I felt that way towards was "Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood" (a book I've read at least 20 times). I was stoked to see that Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd were to be in it (oh and the fabulous Maggie Smith!). I was certain that this book would be an awesome, moving movie.
Oh my gosh, I could not have been more wrong! The movie was horrid! I've seen it twice. The first time I yelled and swore and cried because it took my story and changed it dramatically. I watched it a second time just to make sure I was right about my feelings from the first viewing.
From that point on I realized that, other than the Harry Potter series, I was never going to watch a movie based on a book I've read again. I've kept to that. I have yet to see "The Time Traveler's Wife" and I seriously, seriously hope I don't give into my curiosity to see "EPL" just to see what Julia Robert's does with the now character of Elizabeth Gilbert. (I heard somewhere the the character of EG and a male character, who is not the guy from Texas, dance on the roof of a building in India...yeah, that did not happen in the book and I can't imagine why it would be added since her time in India was introspective and less about dancing on roofs).
So what do you guys think? How many of you have seen "The Road" or any other book turned movie and for those of you that have read EPL, will you see the movie? I'm very curious. I know we book lovers are so protective of our books, especially the ones that stay with us, books we turn to for comfort as we would a dear friend (not necessarily meaning I'll be going back to "The Road" for comfort any time soon as there is little comfort to spare in the story, I'd much rather whatever comfort there is leave with the characters as they need it more than I).
(The only books turned movies I have liked are books I read after seeing the movie: Fried Green Tomatoes and Where the Heart Is - don't remind me of Percy Jackson...)
(Oh, and the Harry Potter series turned into movies....a whole other topic reserved for some emo HP LJ community...I won't go into it here, I'll spare you my rant)
