In Cardiff

If you've ever seen Doctor Who and/or Torchwood, you might know that Cardiff is a bit of an interesting place. We're not here to re-hash Whoniverse canon, we're not here to fight aliens, we're here to live... In Cardiff, where anything and anyone can turn up.

...why the bloody hell is Light an unplayable character?

Because we have Near (and Matt) in-game post-canon for one and while we're fine with bringing characters back from the dead with sufficient explanation, he's one that could prove problematic if the player doesn't get on-board with the other DN players it can lead to unnecessary drama. Unplayable characters aren't ENTIRELY unplayable--the idea is that it needs to be someone already in-game who is willing to work with the other players that would, by necessity of canon, be involved with that character. Our first priority is to players already in the game and it's easier just to lay that sort of thing out to start with rather than rejecting applications that would be problematic in fitting into the world out of hand.

I understand that it's not my game (and I haven't, in fact, seen either series that the setting is based on, so this could be total nonsense), but it seems like a plot device that allows for people to be brought in from different dimensions could be manipulated to pick up people from different points in canon timelines?

It's just that the game itself looks kind of interesting, but the lack of flexibility and openness that the Unplayable Characters list suggests really deters me from apping anyone, Light or otherwise. :\

The Rift, as it is, doesn't exist in canon to bring in other people, and when it does it tends to screw them up something awful. Though that isn't the point. Yes, people are brought in from a variety of time lines, we have a young Albus Dumbledore and Grindelwald, for instance, but that doesn't detract from the fact that there are characters that no matter where a player draws them from, are going to prove problematic with the characters already in game. This isn't a big game or even a widely advertised game, you aren't going to see comms spammed with it because that's not how it works. It's a word of mouth, slow-growing game because we don't want it to get out of hand, get too big, we want to know our players and be able to deal with any problems that arise ( ... )
