They took away my milk! :*(
http://www.wilcoxfarms.com/newsrelease.pdf Wilcox Farms is a very cool Washington dairy that provides organic milk that has only undergone regular pasteurization, not UHP (ultra-high, which completely sterilizes the milk and makes it suitable to transport long distances and sit on the shelf up to six months, also destroys the normal milk proteins thus making yougurt and cheese making impossible, and in general, does not taste as good). They were available at my corner grocery store, which was just about the coolest thing ever. However, they've closed their facilities in Western Washington, and now I have to find a new source of local organic milk. Yes, I could drink the regular stuff. But I am in a place where it is possible for me to find local organic products, and I feel that ethically (and gustatorialy - lol, so not a word!) I should do so. So now I'm researching different dairies and so forth, and everything seems to be either UHP or raw. Come on guys, split the difference! The argument for raw milk is very interesting, but I still have some (microbiologically sound) concerns about the risks inherrent there.
I found a very cool blog today:
http://www.ethicurean.com/ . It has been cracking me up all day. Mostly dry wit and links to scads of interesting articles.
I'm currently sitting in lab waiting for my gel to finish staining and my western to finish running. Proteomics is so slow! And Jerry expects me to get it done so fast! gah! Anyways, work has just been one big stress-ball for months now, you knew that :)
I did get to go to a conference a week or so ago, I'm not sure if I posted about it here. It was great, Advances in global health by non-governmental agencies! I passed around my business card and hopefully made contacts for that eventual day when I start looking for a real job (ooh, scary). Also, Prof. Joyce Millen from Willamette was there presenting! So I got to hang out with her all day! And she's coming to seattle in April and I get to take her sightseeing after her meeting! Yay! Does it still count as being a teacher's pet if you graduated almost 2 years ago? But yeah, she's awesome.
Oh! Pictures! My friends Jen and Kelly and I went wandering around trying to get lost in West Seattle. We never really managed to get lost but we found some gorgeous parks. Jen posted photos, you should go look cause they are gorgeous!
