I've been to a few different bars/clubs these past few weeks, and there's plenty of odd phenomena that goes on in these places. For instance, if a girl gives you the time of day, she expects to be purchased a drink. And the drinks carried in the test tubes by the shot girls contain very little alcohol, if any at all. However, the weirdest thing I've noticed is this:
Whenever the song "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard is played, or ANYTHING by Jon Bon Jovi, girls will immediately exclaim "OH MY FUCKING GOD!" then scramble onto the dance floor and round up the rest of their crew. They then proceed to stand on a bar or in tight little circles, hold their drinks up and sing along with the song.
The part I don't understand is that this happens in EVERY BAR I'VE BEEN TO. And it's not just one group of girls. It's EVERY girl in the joint! And these girls are like, between 19 and 22 years old. They were in diapers when Bon Jovi was popular. How did "Livin' on a Prayer" become so important to them that they must go tear their friend Brittany away from that frat boy who's basically having anal sex with her although her clothes are on, just to scream "WE GOTTA HOLLLLLLLLLD ON...TO WHAT. WE. GOT." in proximity to eachother? Can't you enjoy the song yourself? Or not freak out? I mean, they'll probably hear "Pour Some Sugar on Me" four more times that night, depending on how many other bars they go to. And they'll react the same way. I guess I just don't get it. Whenever that "don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me" song comes on, they just continue grinding and making out with anonymous males. But Bon Jovi and Def Leppard most activate some nerve deep in the brain that says "find friends, dance on bar".
In terms of "Pour Some Sugar on Me", the DJ encourages them by stopping the music at the title line and letting the girls scream it out. I suppose it's all in good fun...but why THOSE songs? And why the same reaction EVERYWHERE I go? I don't know. I guess I just don't fit in too well with my peers.
