I spent my 8 and a half hour shift today helping set up the calendar kiosk and it actually ended up being kind of fun. I got to sort out and shelve the myriad variaties of calendar, including "Toliet Seats of The World", "Argyle Sweaters" (Borders exclusive) and, of course, the High Times calendar (made all the better by the fact that it's on a shelf next to the Andy Griffith calendar), cut open boxes, awkwardly have to tell people they can't buy calendars, make trips to the storage unit and generally just kind of bounce back and forth between the store, the kiosk and the storage unit, looking important with my big cart and slowly eating all of the chocolate Entemann's donuts that my boss brought in. I worked with Bailey and Wendy, who are both very nice and friendly.
I ended up walking away from the shift thinking about how bizarre it is that, not only is there enough money to be made in calendars that you can just sell a shit ton of them in the middle of the mall, but that there is enough interest in fucking AUGUST to support a calendar kiosk.
Current favorite book request from a customer: "Let My People Go Surfing" (Probably a kids book)
Customer Interaction of the Day: Me: (pushing cart with cardboard on it down an aisle, enter teenage girls)
Teenage Girl #1: Hi, do you work here?
Me: No, I just like pushing carts down aisles.
Teenage Girl #2: Do you have the last Harry Potter Book?
Me: Pretty sure we do.
Teenage Girl #2: It has an orange cover.
Me:.....
I found a copy in the back and brought it out and one of the girls was like "Yes, finally!". I think they must have just gotten out a POW camp or something.
I'm liking Borders way more than I thought I would, but that may just be due to the fact that, previously, how much I made per hour was almost completely dependent upon trying to get people to buy shit. I'm also only going to be working for a total of six weeks, which will be kinda awkward to break to my boss, but I imagine she'll be fine with it.
