march madness...

After watching this Gonzaga garbage, I'm giving my blog some college basketball love.

So as we move into tourney time and since I work for the Worldwide Leader and see TONS of basketball while I'm here; I'm gonna throw in my two cents.

First of all, I really can't believe how average Cuse has become. Not necessarily bad, but average beyond compare. Granted, this could have been Carmelo's senior year and Gerry would have had a ridiculous career as the number 2/3 option behind him, but these juniors are just not nearly as good as they should be. D-Nice looks scared and timid on any looks he gets; T-Rob wildly throws it off the backboard when he doesn't dunk it, and Watkins could be SO much more solid. Devendorf is a cocky SOB, but I like the spunk he brings, plus the kid is talented. Here's hoping Paul Harris coming in next year starts to bring the Orange back to the upper ranks of the Big East.

Ok, my Cuse rant is done. Maybe they'll do well in the NIT. Ugh.

So having watched a whole bunch of basketball recently, here's my #1 seed possibilities: Duke, Nova, UConn, Memphis, Ohio State, Texas. Sure sure, I'm gonna hear Columbus-bias for the Buckeyes, but if they win the Big Ten Tourney, 26-4 is a pretty damn good record with 3 of those 4 losses in hostile Big Ten road games and the lone home loss in double OT by 2. My guess is unless Duke, UConn or Nova lose early in their conference tourney, it'll be Duke, Uconn, Nova and Memphis. Some strong 2 seeds in Texas and OSU though.

Teams that flat out don't impress me? Gonzaga for one. Ok, you played a good non conference schedule and stepped up in those games. But then you go through your conference tourney and beat teams with losing records by a point or two night after night? The rest of the WCC is inferior competition Bulldogs; you should make sure they look like it. I'm not sold on GW, although I like the way they play. They should land a 3 seed, and I think this suits them well. UCLA. Here it comes, lord knows my dad and I hate the West Coast and how they're overrated. Look for them to lose to the 6 seed in the second round.

Sleepers? I was gonna put UNC in this, but they've been on such a role, they'll probably get a 2 seed now. Wow has Roy Williams do a great job with these young kids. I'm convinced that the most dangerous team is a bunch of young players that are starting to believe in themselves. Look for the Heels to do well if they don't get starstruck. I like Kansas as a 5 seed too. Similar setup to UNC as they struggled early and have some real talent across the board.

With the latest bracketology, Arkansas or Wisconsin would face Gonzaga in the second round. I'm gonna call it now: the winner of the 7/10 game beats the Zags. That's probably your biggest second round upset. As far as the first round, I like Northern Iowa to beat Marquette in a 6/11 matchup and my hatred of Pitt will shine through as the Seminoles of Florida State knock the Panthers off. Those are my only real big first round upsets, although I'll need to do some more looking once the actual bracket comes out.

So let's get down to it; who wins it all? This might be crazy, but at some point, UConn is gonna sleepwalk through a game and lose it late. My guess is this happens against Florida in the Sweet 16. This is what will open things up for Nova and that's how they take home the title 21 years after they shocked Georgetown. Final Four is Nova, North Carolina, LSU and Ohio State. Keep in mind, this is all with the current bracketology and is complete subject to bracket changes. I just had to get this all down because I was really pissed at Gonzaga celebrating winning the WCC by one freakin point. Screw you Morrison, cut your hair you hippie
