It started out when
celtcub was getting rid of his 30-gallon fish tank. Would I like it? Hell YES I would! I could switch out the 10-gallon that he gave us last year and fill it with even more fish. Who wouldn't be stoked with more fish? Well, after a little bit of research, I discovered that 30 gallons of water would weigh about 240 lbs. Our poor little IKEA cabinet just would NOT support that weight. I didn't want to give up on the tank, but it would need its own dedicated fish tank cabinet. I also didn't want to get rid of the cabinet that we have now, since it's a perfectly good cabinet for all sorts of things. But where to put it...? Our apartment is quite well-packed at the moment, so something will have to go.
I wish I had pictures to back this up, but my current idea is to pick up
this bookcase in black/brown (matches all of our other furniture), replacing both the low bookcase (wine & cookbooks) and the tall bookcase (foodstuffs & appliances) that we're using, and place it along the wall facing the kitchen. That will get pantry items and cookbooks and possibly even the rest of the appliances. Then we'll move the current fish cabinet around the corner from its current location and use it as a replacement bar. The new fish tank cabinet will go where the old one was. Huzzah!
If that was it, that'd be fine. Unfortunately it's becoming more and more obvious that our DVD wall-shelves are just not cutting it. When we installed them, immediately the shelves attached to the wall with the TV began to sag. So instead of a nice perpendicular shelf, each one is hanging about 15 degrees too low, threatening to dump all of our DVDs off in a spectacular crash. I haven't figured out how to solve that problem yet, but I'm sure IKEA will be involved somehow.
And finally, in the spirit of replacing old things, after two years of wrestling with a filing cabinet that Michelle's grandfather used, I finally bought a
new one. Unfortunately my powers of estimation failed me, since it will not fit into the closet where the old one was. So it's going along the wall where both the printer cabinet and our bookcase is, things are getting a little cramped. We may end up having to get rid of the bookcase and replace it with something else. Our poor apartment just can't hold all of our stuffs!
So yeah, at least three pieces of furniture will have to be bought in the near future. I guess I know where my Christmas bonus is going this year.
