Yep, I'm back to uni as of tomorrow. This semester I have two subjects and I'm just about fainting at the amount of reading I have to do. Both subjects (I am taking the Part B intro course and Criminal Law) are just massive. It's partly readings but there is a lot of work besides.
All that stuff about how overworked law students are? Yeah, it's true.
It's kinda funny because I thought I had an idea of what I was getting into with the Part B class. I had thought it would be much the same as Part A but the tutorial exercises are twice as work heavy. The Criminal Law subject is just as bad if not worse. The tutorial work is just as fiddly and time consuming with the addition of having to research both defense and prosecution.
The reading is just as intimidating. The Crim Law subject has us reading 100+ pages per week not counting cases and additional assigned material. The Part B subject is less intense thanks to my reading ahead but it was around 50-80 pages depending on the week. Both subjects have a lot of finicky details to get right, heavy memorization and skill building since I'm still a law noob.
Assignments for the semester are relatively forgiving, as neither subject calls for a research essay. Instead, it's mostly based on tute work, a few short case briefs and the final exam. This is a huge relief because I don't know how I'd have *time* for anything else.
At the moment I know I'll be very busy but exactly how much... I don't know. I worry a bit that I'll not have a lot of leeway if I get sick or something happens. With two subjects I'm pushing my limits. I'm even more uncertain because I've had an offer to do some work that I'm considering. It's all tentative and the details unknown but it could be a good opportunity, so I'm even in a bigger mess when it comes to time management.
Despite all this, I'm feeling remarkably positive. I'm enjoying the subjects and as a bonus my health seems pretty damn good. I just wish the roof wasn't still leaking...
