Media - May 2012

How is May over already, I feel like I posted one of these yesterday. X_x This year is racing to finish. I haven't had a chance to do half the things I intended to have done by now. Goal for June: write my G1 before the month ends. If nothing else I'd have so many more free hours if I didn't use them busing everywhere.

Movies

13. Honey 2 (May 1) - 3 stars

The story's kind of weak but who cares. Kat Graham is the star and there's a half dozen truly kickass dance sequences. :) I'm a simple soul, I do not ask for more.

14. Hugo (May 1) - 4.5 stars

Ohhhhhh. There are two very important going for this film. First: it is visually stunning, there were several points where I just could not deal with the longing the aesthetics evoked in me (did you see that professor's studio, I want it, that is my dream workplace right there). Second: an amazingly emotionally effective second half. I was not overly invested in the beginning of the movie - it was a bit scattered I thought - but once the film starts its George Méliès storyline it gels together. So many feelings about Méliès and his wife and the importance of history and film making. So many. ;_; I was holding my breath at points with how much I wanted everything to end happily for them.

15. Drive (May 2) - 3.5 stars

I wish fandom's trigger warning policy applied to mainstream media. I probably would've have watched this movie regardless but it would have been nice to have known I was in for such graphic violence. D: So much gore, I can't. I would be really careful about recommending this: I think the cinematography was beautiful and I liked how the Driver/Irene romance played out - so low key as to verge on platonic. To be honest one of the few points the movie actively disappointed me was when he kissed her - and I appreciated the quietness of the movie overall but. Are you okay with watching a person's head bashed in? With scenes of people stabbed and shot? With these scenes being numerous and not cut away from? I'm seriously considering writing up trigger warnings on a sticky note and putting it inside the dvd case before I return it to the library.

16. The Muppets (May 8) - 4 stars

That was incredibly enjoyable. I have very vague memories of the muppets, I didn't watch it often as a child so this movie had to sell itself to me on more than nostalgia. It did! The humour was delightful all around, and I laughed every time they broke the fourth wall. Plus this musical number was great, I couldn't stop laughing once I realized what they were doing. :D Also Kermit/Miss Piggy for life. Yelling at a screen for a puppet frog and pig to kiss may not the be the most dignified moment of my life but bawk it, puppet love is just as valid as any other kind.
