Not so delicious?

May 12, 2011 20:31

Things that are annoying me at present: firefox wants me to update, the old delicious add-on won't work if I do, if I want to use the new add-on I have to agree to put up with whatever the new owners want to do with my bookmarks, and delicious has been logging me out more frequently than normal, which I assume has something to do with the fact that they're trying to get everyone to "opt-in" to the new version. I've been rather stubborn about this (read: clinging to old firefox and old delicious by my fingernails), even though it means my browser is unnecessarily re-syncing thousands of bookmarks every time I log in, because I'm not at all sure I want to deal with the "new" delicious.

(And how obnoxious is it to give only the options "Agree" or "Remind me later" on the log-in page? Where's the "Never, stop asking me" option?)

But seriously, is no one else as skeeved out by the privacy policy of the company that's bought delicious as I am? I was expecting a rehash of the fannish outcry and general panic to come out when they announced the new ownership, but so far (at least within my own admittedly confined fannish circle) I haven't heard a peep.

It sounds to me like there's going to be a lot more advertising:

We will also use your Personal Information to contact you with Delicious newsletters, marketing or promotional materials and other information that may be of interest to you. If you decide at any time that you no longer wish to receive such communications from us, please follow the unsubscribe instructions...

But oh, don't worry, you can opt out! One of those wonderful tiny links at the bottom of the e-mail telling them not to send you spam!

And they're going to hand out every scrap of data they can get on you to advertisers...

When you use our Service our servers automatically record information that your browser sends whenever you visit a website or online service (“Log Data”), including, but not limited to, your computer’s Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, browser type or the webpage you were visiting before you came to our Site, pages of our Site that you visit, the time spent on those pages, information you search for via our Service, access times and dates, and other statistics. We use this information to monitor and analyze use of the Service (e.g., to understand how our users interact with advertisements)... We do not treat Log Data as Personal Information, though we may aggregate, analyze and evaluate such information for the same purposes as stated above regarding other Non-Identifying Information.
(emphasis mine)

We may share aggregated information that does not include Personal Information and we may otherwise disclose Non-Identifying Information and Log Data with third parties for industry analysis, demographic profiling and other purposes.

Compare this to the old yahoo privacy policy:

Unless required by law, we will not share our users' personal information, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and usage information, except with their consent or in aggregate or anonymous form, with third parties.

Guys, they are giving themselves carte blanche to hand anything you do on the site to anyone they want. ...that's at least mildly creepy, right?

I'm seriously thinking about spending the next couple of months (old delicious dies July 2011) backing up my bookmarks and moving them to a new platform, and only using delicious for logged-out searches in the future.

Thoughts? How are other bookmarking sites working out, for those who jumped ship back when the death of delicious was being forecast months ago?
