I went to my sister's graduation from Oregon State today, sat through hours of speeches that all promised brevity only to merrily break said promise, and I got a nasty sunburn for my trouble. In the end, we didn't even get to see her get the diploma. They started with the PHDs and read off the names of the 60 some odd people getting them. Then they did the Masters degrees, and they just had the folks march up in a line and receive their diploma while the band played, sans reading of names. We thought maybe they had already covered those folks in a separate ceremony, but then they moved on to the Baccalaureate folks and it was the same deal; marching up while the band played and no reading of names. We lost sight of her in the crowd and completely missed it when she got her diploma. Now, seeing as how it had already been close to three hours before they handed off the first diploma, I didn't really mind not having to sit through the reading of 4200 names. Still, it made for a strange graduation.
