far away from the bells of new york city

In celebration of the fact that there is less than a month left to White Collar returning on January 18th, I have been inflicting the second season on my family, with hilarious results:

My mom (my mom!) was watching Unfinished Business and exclaimed "Ooh, my favourite man!" early in the show, and I was so so so delighted because she meant Mozzie. (Sometimes she's so cute I can't believe she's my mom.)

If I had to name the most unexpected reaction my family had to White Collar, it would be that they find Neal funny. I think I am as bad as Costis with his sense of humour; I did not realise some of Neal's lines were written to be funny until my family laughed at them. (That's because I read them as "Neal mouthing off.")

My youngest brother, as I rather expected, took to Neal entirely too much; Neal is a Bad Influence, this is not a good thing. He notices Neal's clothes and how well he dresses. And when Neal is being particularly badly behaved (you know what I mean), Youngest will say, half-admiringly, half-gleefully, "He is so HORRIBLE!" (in much the same way I will protest "HE IS SO HORRIBLE!" to my friend who owns the lovely fluffy white Samoyed, when said Samoyed decides to lean on me / sit on me / otherwise come into close contact with me in a way that demonstrates that basically he thinks he owns me, which I know is terrible except I find it very endearing (also he is not my dog, this makes all the difference in the world)).

The other brother, on the other hand, when watching Point Blank, said, in a very matter-of-fact manner, "The only way to keep Neal out of trouble is to put a bullet in his head, or shut him up in a box. With no doors and no windows."

Other Brother did give Youngest a black hat for Christmas; I have nothing to say on that.

Fic/Art that made me Very Very Happy

0. If you click on no other link on this post, click on this one: I keep re-reading tongari's 25 Lives (illustrated short story, not entirely worksafe) and falling in love with it over and over again.

1. demoerin linked me to fabulous Yuletide (cut for spoilers) Gen/Costis fic. ♥ Takes place after King of Attolia. Has bonus Attolia/Eddis - my other favourite pairing that never happened, so HAPPINESS ALL AROUND.

I must have read it over ten times and it was just linked to me yesterday. ♥ It originated from this prompt - my heart, it is dancing with joy.

Also, I think I have Costis's sense of humour, I did not think Aris's joke was funny. *buries face in hands* On my part, I understood logically why it was meant to be funny, I personally didn't think it was funny.

THANK YOU FOREVER, ED. ♥

2. robotlove (hi ♥) found this truly fascinating Code Geass/Inception crossover (I have yet to finish reading it, but I am putting it down here so I can remember it), also Rolo = Arthur, I am a happy person.

(You knew it was coming) White Collar

3. Matt Bomer singing It Only Takes A Moment live - Youtube link here. He has an amazing singing voice, which of course led to calls for undercover!singing!Neal.

4. I would personally like Neal to go undercover in a New York jazz bar and sing Me and My Shadow. Frank Sinatra version here, Robbie Williams version here.

This is why it's perfect:

Like the wallpaper sticks to the wall
Like the seashore clings to the sea
Like you’ll never get rid of your shadow
You’ll never get rid of me

Let all the others fight and fuss
Whatever happens, we’ve got us.

Me and my shadow
We’re closer than pages that stick in a book
We’re closer than ripples that play in a brook
Strolling down the avenue
Wherever you find him, you’ll find me, just look
Closer than a miser or the bloodhound’s to Liza
Me and my shadow
We’re closer than smog when it clings to L.A.
We’re closer than Bobby is to J.F.K.
Not a soul can bust this team in two
We stick together like glue

Me and my shadow
And now to repeat what I said at the start
They’ll need a large crowbar to break us apart

5. White Collar Fixation linked elrhiarhodan's A Writer's Guide to White Collar Character Names. I like it best for the quick way of remembering Conman-in-Chief's first name: it's Neal as in "steal".

6. The perfect White Collar Christmas song: Josh Groban's The Bells of New York City (love the NYC cityscapes!).

There's a pale winter moon in the sky
Coming through my window
And the park is laid out like a bed below
It's a cold dark night and my heart melts like the snow
And the bells of New York City tell me not to go

It's always this time of year that my thoughts undo me
With the ghosts of many lifetimes all about
But from these mad heights I can always hear the sound
Of the bells of New York City singing all around

Stay with me
Stay with me
Refuge from these broken dreams
Wait right here
Awake with me
On silent snow-filled streets

Sing to me one song for joy and one for redemption
And whatever's in between that I call mine
With the street lamp light to illuminate the grey
And the bells of New York City calling me to stay
The bells of New York City calling me to stay.
