The
Music Meme, from
glasssubway, who gave me the letter S.
S is an amazing letter, and not just because some of my favourite Reborn characters begin their names with that letter. Shouichi, Spanner, Sawada "the T is silent" Tsunayoshi - and those Silver-Haired Morons better known as Squalo and Gokudera Hayato. (Yeah, Gokudera doesn't quite fit, but he's such an SHM, yes?)
It was so hard to pick just five songs, because I could easily have chosen five more. As it was, I picked six - you'll see why the sixth Doesn't Really Count as a new song to just about everyone here, but I definitely felt it was worthy of mention!
1.
Sinkin' Soon, Norah Jones
This song has just about some of the craziest lyrics I've ever heard, and it comes with a
music video that's just as craaaazy, too. This song makes me think of entropy as a beautiful melody, wrapped up in Norah Jones' laconic, haunting voice. It's very different from Don't Know Why.
We're an oyster cracker on the stew,
And the honey in the tea,
We're the sugar cubes, one lump or two,
In the black coffee,
The golden crust on an apple pie,
That shines in the sun at noon,
We're a wheel of cheese high in the sky,
But we're gonna be sinkin' soon.
2.
Scar, Missy Elliot
This! Is privately my Xanxus vs. Tsuna song. Which is pretty darn funny, considering you'd never think of Xanxus or Tsuna while listening to this song, but hey, this is how it goes:
And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could have gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?
Funny thing is, two people I know agreed about two years ago that this song reminded them of me. I wonder what that says.
3.
Shape, Sting
Especially for
glassubway. *grin* I'd really like you to have this song! Everybody can always use more Sting songs, yes? I'm especially happy that I got to share this song, because it's one that resonates with me. It's the chorus that does it, really - what it means to me is, This is the way the world is, but that's not the way I am. That's not the way I have to be, and that's not the way I'm going to be.
He deals the cards as a meditation
And those he plays never suspect
He doesn't play for the money he wins
He doesn't play for the respect
He deals the cards to find the answer
The sacred geometry of chance
The hidden law of probable outcome
The numbers lead a dance
He may play the jack of diamonds
He may lay the queen of spades
He may conceal a king in his hand
While the memory of it fades
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
4.
Stolen, Dashboard Confessional
There are no words for how much I love this song. It captures, for me, the heady feeling of first falling in love, and it has a
music video that takes your breath away and makes you smile like anything. The video, for me, perfectly expresses the thought that love is a very special kind of magic. If you loved this song, you've got to listen to the
live acoustic version, too. ♥
Before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced,
Another sun soaked season fades away
I watch you spin around in your highest heels
You are the best one, of the best ones
We all look like we feel
You have stolen
You have stolen my heart
5.
Somethin' Stupid, Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman
Frank and Nancy Sinatra did the original, but I must say, this cover owns my heart. You might want to catch the
music video, too. I personally think it's absolutely enchanting, but that's just me.
I can see it in your eyes
You still despise the same old lines
You heard the night before
And though it's just a line to you
For me it's true
And never seemed so right before
6. And of course, how could I resist:
Sakura Addiction, Takeshi Kondo (Hibari) and Iida Toshinobu (Mukuro).
Mukuro, you can sing. Gokudera, you should not. One day I will write about why I think Mukuro is the lawyer of the Vongola (I know, I know, facepalm) - but look: he goes around being completely obsessed with making contracts with people (that's his Kufufu song's real title), he's pretty damn good at illusions, and Mammon only ever lost because Mukuro was his opponent. I personally think he has this lovely hypnotic voice that makes you want to believe everything he says (a fellow associate has a voice with this quality, too).
