Weekly Lost Recs - Sayid Gen Fic

Feb 03, 2009 15:14

There’s not much Sayid gen fic out there, but here are four that I particularly like - all pretty sad. Sayid fic just has to be sad, doesn’t it?

Europe Catches Cold by bachlava (R)
He walks to and from work, avoiding the metro. It’s seven kilometres between the apartment and Le Portail d’Arabie; Sayid takes in everything he sees and tries to think of none of it.

A detached, alienated Sayid in Paris around the time of Enter 77. Like so much of bachlava’s writing, this fic seems literary and novelistic to me. Unlike the grand, melodramatic sweeps of Lost, bachlava's Sayid exists in a world of quietude and loneliness. There’s also a great sense of place here in the way Paris is depicted.

(FYI, Sayid does engage in gay sex in this fic, but not with anyone we know, and the sex isn’t explicit. Does that make this technically slash? In any case, I think it reads as a gen fic.)

Cost by cynthia_arrow (PG)
Even when people don't watch him, he is watching them. But he is not a terrorist. He is something else.

I like this small fic by one of my favorite Lost writers. She posted it soon after The Economist aired, and I think cynthia_arrow really gets to the heart of O6 Sayid in this short, simple fic.

A couple by levitatethis, who seems to have only recently started writing Sayid fic.

To Whom It May Concern (PG-13)
Sayid writes letters in his mind. They are addressed to no one in particular, flowing freewheeling to the universe, to Allah, to anything that will render sense from the chaotic.

Gorgeous characterization, beautifully written. The writer has such empathy for poor, lost Sayid. I love this fic, though it breaks my heart.

Red (PG-13) Spoilers through 5.03.
Every breath he takes carries a question mark at the end - but no answer reveals itself beyond confused riddles that scoff and jeer, holding him up for pitying ridicule.

Just posted, this fic again explores the wasteland that is O6 Sayid's soul. Here, though, we get a bit of hope mixed in with the pain. levitatethis clearly has her finger on the pulse of Sayid characterization in current canon.

If you read these fics and like them, be sure to let the writers know. :)
