Time for plan A

"Right this way Luke," the Doctor said as he unlocked the TARDIS and headed inside, "I hope you're ready for this." He started fiddling with some controls on the console before him and looked up as something lowered itself from the ceiling. "Right, how good are you with technology?"

Luke has to take a minute to look around the inside of the TARDIS. He traveled with the Broken Doctor once, but it felt like so long ago, now. He'd really missed it. Who wouldn't?

"Technology? Oh, I'm not bad. Depends on what you want me to do, for the most part."

The TARDIS hummed softly, obviously happy to have the Doctor back inside of it.

"Yes, technology." He was already busy stripping wires and pulling out cable, "Right, that panel there," he motioned to one with his head, "Open that up, swap all the positions of the blue wire's with the red wires. Oh, that reminds me of a song I used to sing with Ross.

And as he worked he decided to sing it, "One fish, red figh, up, up, up. Two fish, blue fish, down, down down."

Luke coaxed the panel open and began to work as the Doctor had instructed. The song made him smile and laugh. It was so cheerful and catchy, really.

Ah, the wonders of Dr Seuss, Ross loved it when they read his books together. Brilliant books, he'd miss reading those at night, picking different voices for different characters.

But the Doctor kept humming, even as he came over to measure the size of Luke's head.

"Um, what are you doing?" Luke watched the Doctor with apprehension as he drew close. It wasn't that he didn't trust the Doctor, no, not at all, it was the strange faraway look in his eyes, never a particularly good expression when involved in such activities.

"I have to make adjustment for the helmet. Need to make sure it's as snug as a bug in a rug or who knows what might happen. But nothing to worry about." He almost said trust him, he was a Doctor, but that was a litle cheesey, even for him.

"Alright." Luke didn't move as the Doctor slid the thing onto his head and adjusted it. It made him faintly nervous. "What will happen when we actually try it? The mind-linking-to-TARDIS thing?"

"Oh right, well...um, after I dabbled a little with your DNA, so the connection doesn't kill you, it'll just be like, well..." The Doctor thought for a moment, "You know when you think and you can hear your voice in your head, it's like that but the sound'll be the TARDIS, not you."

"Huh." It sounds fascinating. Luke's always had a certain fondness for the TARDIS, regardless of which one it was. Even though the Broken Doctor's had played pranks on him endlessly, he still respected her.

Then what the Doctor had said at the beginning of the sentence sunk in.

"Dabble with my DNA??? What do you mean???"

Of all the crazy schemes, that one sounded the most dangerous.

"What? Oh right!" He chuckled, "I've got to make you compatable, I wouldn't want your head to explode. It's harmless really, I can put you back again after, if you'd like."

It just means that He'd feel the TARDIS more, not just be in it. "The choice is yours of course."

"Well...I certainly don't want my head to explode..." Yet the idea of being connected mentally with something from this world within a world, Torchwood and the Doctor and all that, was tempting. Then he'd know for sure he had a permanent residence inside of this world, and that was incredibly reassuring.

"I think I'll make the final judgement call on that after we've finished saving the world, yeah?"

"Then it's settled," And back he went to stripping wires and reconnecting them. The buzz of his screwdriver sounded over his humming, happy to be working away and doing what he did best.

A few minutes later the Doctor looked up, "Finished, how about you?"

"Just about, yeah." Luke finished connecting the last wire and turned to face the Doctor expectantly. "Now what?"

"Now!" He patted the chair he was standing by and grinned, "you take a seat and we make you Luke 2.0. Wont hurt a bit, well it might pinch a little, but it wont hurt."

Luke swallowed nervously and nodded. He was not particularly excited about this part, but it had to be done. He sat down in the chair stiffly, forcing himself to relax. The Doctor was notoriously brilliant, after all. What could go wrong?

And with a grin he pulled the 'helmet' over Luke's head and it fit snuggly on. There was a bright smile as he headed over to the console, "Right, relax, and don't worry." Before he had a chance to reply, the Doctor pressed the button to start the process.
