Yea so it's been a while since I've updated, these are coming further and further in between. That's good in the sense that I have better things to do than complain or brag about my life to people I hardly ever see. It's bad in that I'm losing communication with them over this, but that's what the phone is for! Anyone I truly care about receives a phone call or long IM conversation often enough for us to know what's going on in our lives.
I have been keeping myself busy with school, fraternity, friends, and sports. It's gotten alot better than my entry about 2 weeks ago where I was considering a transfer out of here. I ended up doing a ton of research and getting opinions from people over Northeastern, UBC, Purdue, etc. After I realized it was mostly me keeping myself from having a good time, the idea is basically out of the window. I didn't have nearly the same playful attitude as first semester or back in high school and it was blindsiding me. I've gotten closer with Frank, Jody, Mark and in general my pledge class from weekend events to just hanging around the dorms during the week killing time. Caramello's, Halo, frisbee and soccer (since the weather got nicer, which also helps) are common events that I really enjoy.
I'm having a blast in studio this semester just cuz our group project is doing amazingly well, were alot further than most groups and have fantastic feedback. We were asked to come up with a gift for RPI to give to alumni, business representatives, accepted students, parents and whatnot. We're actually going to produce our gift at the Advanced Manufacturing Lab (AML) we have here on campus with injection molding, CNC lathing, and all the high tech gizmos over there. We did research on gifts and what RPI has given on the past. We've had at least 5 people that deal directly with gift ideas come in and critique and give feedback on ours. After 6 or 7 possible ideas, we easily narrowed it down to one: a paper holder. Initially, it was meant to clip onto the laptop with a retractable or foldable attachment and be used as a desktop paper holder. After design and technical difficulties as well as opinions from other visitors, we gave up on the laptop attachment and went strictly as a desktop paper holder. Our design shifted from innnovation and creativity to refinement and aesthetics. It wlil be made out of a slanted clear solid polycarbonate cylinder with a groove cut out of the back to hold the paper. On top of the cylinder, we'll leave a space and used a machined or pressed metal seal of Rensselaer, the one that the school actually uses. It's really elegant and grabs attention. This last weekend was 'newly accepted students weekend' and we set up a table and made a survey for feedback after they viewed our product rendered in 3D modeling program and a soft model made out of plastic and a car decal. We're fine tuning the curve and will make a rapid prototype in the AML for next Tuesday I believe. On a production run of 600 units, ours will probably cost somewhere between 10 and 15 dollars to make; right in the area the school is looking for.
Other classes are doing alright: Calc 2 is easy but I'll still probably get a B cuz of the gateway exam, IEA is horrific after my performance on test #2 and I'm hoping for a C at the end of the semester. The cannon we made in processes out of a block and cylinder will be buffed and assembled today, I plan on giving it to my brother for a birthday present. It's a pass/fail class so it doesnt affect my GPA. DCS is an easy A after my presentation this morning. And I expect a B but possibly an A in studio this semester. Our current project will get an A when we present it well, but my first project is gonna bring my down to a B (D+ bullshit). Overall, I'm happy it will done soon. Classes are done the 5th of May I believe and I only have finals the next week: IEA on monday, and Calc 2 on Friday the 13th (BUM BUM BUMMMM). I fly out that evening and get back home around midnight :D
I'll be working at the valet parking at the mall again this summer, all of the internships fell through. Valet isn't bad cuz I end up making about $15/hr while driving cars and scouting the beautiful ladies the Woodlands is known for :P
Well, I've gotta go to calc and finish the processes cannon and work on my shirt for Friday and somehow fit in a group meeting for studio tonight too.
Lata,
Jeff
