Anime Review: "Le Portrait de Petite Cossette"

Feb 24, 2011 12:16

Eiri Kurahashi is an art student who works part time in his uncle's antique shop. Lately, he has been obsessed with an image in an antique glass at the shop, which seems to show her life. One night, he makes a connection to her and finds out her name is Cossette, the daughter of an 18th century aristocrat who was murdered by the artist who painted her in a series of paintings. Her spirit is trapped within the glass. To free her, someone must take on the punishment for the sins the artist committed.

To be honest, I think this 3 part OVA is a mess and makes little sense. The whole thing plays out like a fever dream, with not a lot of seperation between reality and what else goes on. While Eiri has friends (all women, BTW), all their efforts to figure out what is wrong with Eiri doesn't seem to amount to much. It seems to more put a view on what is happening to him externally, but there isn't enough coherance to give a sense of time.

In the end, I don't know if he was really putting Cossette's spirit to rest, or if he was just caught in some psychic trap left over from the trauma of her murder. I don't know if I care.
