Personally, I find it interesting the use of the term "otaku" in his article. Even tho he misuses the term as the article goes on (saying that everyone is otaku is an oxymoron), it is clear he wants to go back to being an otaku: isolated and shut in with the geek culture he loves because such a situation makes the stuff more special to him.

I'm of the opposite mindset. I like discovering all of this stuff and sharing it with friends. Much of it being ubiquitous isn't a problem for me because there is SO MUCH stuff out there to discover that most people will miss a lot of stuff unless they are specifically looking for it. It is this sharing of geek culture that still makes it a rich landscape. There is also always stuff out there which is going to be outside of the mainstream and only attractive to a few people.

But for me, one of the bellweathers that tell me that geek culture, so to speak, isn't as mainstream as he thinks is that "Scott Pilgrim Vs The World" was not a box office success. Movies don't get more geeky than that.
