Because it's 80s Friday

My co-worker insists that Eurythmic's "Who's that girl" is the best 80s song made. It's hard to refute it - it's certainly in the top ten.

Which is what prompted this.

Top ten 80s songs - in no particular order:

1. Eurythmics - Who's that girl?
2. Alphaville - Forever young
3. Dúkkulísurnar - Pamela*
4. Terence Trent D'Arby - Sign your name
5. Kate Bush - Running up that hill
6. Prince - When doves cry
7. INXS - Never tear us apart
8. Scorpions - When the smoke is going down
9. Depeche mode - Blasphemous rumours
10. Madness - The sun and the rain

Runner up:
11. Grýlurnar - Sísí**

Download and see for yourself.

Now you might be be thinking: "But.. but ... what about [this quintessential 80s song]?" I realize there are many rather obvious choices are missing - many of them very good. But I wasn't looking at the songs that elicit the most nostalgia in the listener but rather those songs that, 20-25 years later, are still fucking good songs and will live on as such. Try and argue with that.

* Most of you are probably unfamiliar with this Icelandic ode to Pamela Ewing of Dallas fame. But the razorblades-in-tongue-in-cheek lyrics had to be included. It tells the story of a 15 year old girl who gets pregnant, hates everything about it and wishes she were more like Pamela - who was so lucky to keep miscarrying.
** Play it in any club in Iceland - at any time - and watch the crowd go berserk. And it's a complete coincidence that the two Icelandic songs on the list are by all female bands.
