Not at all sarcastic: the DDoS woes and downtime issues LJ recently faced (in support of free speech in Russia!) are still too fresh in the minds of users.

If LJ took content down as part of their protest, that would become the focus, with a flood of "OMG, LJ down AGAIN???" This way, they focus attention on the actual issue.
