Eee, Monday! I am really in bad need of cheering up today, and I think this will do the trick nicely.

ALSO: On a completely shallow note, Mulder’s stomach is INSANE. Let's all pause together and look at it for a little while.
Oh, no need to tell me! I always do. It can't be helped.

I’m not saying anything either way, but I MAY OR MAY NOT use the pause button a lot while watching this episode, because for a large portion of it, Mulder is wearing pajama pants that are thin, damp and pale yellow, and NOTHING ELSE.
HAHA GOD, I KNOW. I have a friend who got to watch them "blow up" the bank when they shot the episode, and uh... this happened the previous day and caused quite a lot of "twittering" amongst the crew. David, bless him, was completely clueless about it, wandering around covered in fake blood. She even has an awesome picture. My friend K. has the best stories, pretty much ever.

then after she asks him about it, he does this slow turn, like, “Damn, she seems pretty interested. Maybe I should’ve casually mentioned it to her BEFORE it broke!”
LOLOL. They are so hilariously inept. (And I love your little inserted backstory for the framed photo! I can totally buy that!)

The lady with the bangs in the bank is the worst possible person to be stuck in a hold-up with. She will not shut the fuck up.
I think Polly's CTP of this episode started referring to her as "the woman who really needs to get shot". I could not agree more.

Duchovny does a pretty amazing job not only at the basic mechanics of the waterbed scene, his deadpan anger and his pratfalls and his inability to get a pot to catch water, but at making each “day” feel…different and fresh and interesting to watch. Same can be said for Kim Manners, who shoots each scene as though it really is a new, different day, and not a rewind and repeat of only one.
Agreed! I think that's why I never get bored watching this episode, though I've often wondered why, because... essentially, it's just the same thing happening over and over again. Kudos to them! (KIIIIIM. D:) The pratfalls kill me. I think my favorite is when he falls backwards over his shoes, but... don't make me pick.

He says it with his head down, with this studied casualness, as though he doesn’t consider this alternate path-not-taken in the choose your own adventure completely tragic.
Just another one of your garden variety "Oh, MULDER" moments.

I love seeing Mulder back on his couch, I really do. Because I'm one of those weirdos who misses him sleeping there. (Penumbra, come back me up!) I do love the idea of him going mattress shopping, though. Who wouldn't?

As to putting the gun down solving anything... it IS a hostage negotiation technique, but... I'm not gonna lie, much as I love this episode, I have to turn off a HUGE chunk of my brain in order to do so. Mainly because... if you know law enforcement protocol and think about it for five seconds, the entire thing falls apart. (Why? Because Mulder AND Scully, in the real, practical world, would've shot Bernard on sight, even after he showed them the bomb. It's a myth of TV and film that shooting someone rigged with explosives will set them off, which in reality it's nearly impossible to do. Cops and other agents are trained to shoot to kill anyone displaying a potential for deadly force, if they believe they'll exercise it. The second Bernard starts to go for the detonator, he'd be a dead man, if not before then. But I digress.) But I'm going to climb back off my soapbox and just enjoy the pretty!

I don't subscribe to that train of thought, because, well...there's another desk in the office.
I swear, every single little recap post of yours includes at least one thing that reminds me why I love you so much. I don't even care how silly this one is.

I'm really looking forward to your caps of this episode. There aren't enough currently online to appreciate the glory of Mulder's yellow PJ bottoms. I'm counting on ya, Zellie.

Hee, I may be back to this post in a bit with some, just for y'all. Because... I could use some total mind candy to take my brain off the past eight hours, I'm telling you. Keep an eye out! ;D

Yay! I always seem to do these at the perfect time.

David, bless him, was completely clueless about it, wandering around covered in fake blood.
Hee, I love that! It's kind of sweet. And he does seem like it wouldn't occur to him that it might, you know, cause a bit of a fuss.

I think Polly's CTP of this episode started referring to her as "the woman who really needs to get shot". I could not agree more.
Yeah, that's what they call her in the transcript, too. Her shrieking in the first (I think?) holdup is ridiculous!

KIIIIIM. D:
I knoooow. I was really paying attention to the direction while I watched, and it's top-notch.

I think my favorite is when he falls backwards over his shoes, but... don't make me pick.
YES. And there's that great, low angle shot of him sitting on the floor behind his shoes.

Just another one of your garden variety "Oh, MULDER" moments.
It's the "blah blah blah" that kills me! Yeah, sure, Mulder.

I feel you on the couch. But I'm also totally in love with the idea of late S6-into-S7 Mulder getting all grown-up. (And possibly going, "heeeey, I bet an adult woman isn't going to be down with sleeping with me on the couch after we do it...")

Thanks for the hostage info! I was definitely wondering about the shooting part. Because I always think people on TV should immediately shoot suspects and criminals, but then I'm like, "cool it, Sarah, there's probably a little thing called 'protocol,' okay?" But yeah, if they shoot Bernard, then it's not much of an episode, I guess!

I don't even care how silly this one is.
It's not silly! These are important things. Especially because it seems like Scully actually gets the better end of the deal, because while his desk is bigger, she's got the computer!

ETA: I totally agree with what truemyth said, and I was actually thinking the same thing as I worked on this. Because I went into it assuming it would be yellow PJ pants central, and there were barely any caps that did it all justice!

He really had no idea. Typical guy, lol. I do adore the photo she got out of it, though. He's still in Mulder costume and he's got fake blood all over his shirt, and he's surrounded by smiling girls, looking very tired but smiling really cutely. She told me that story, and I was like "WHY DID WE NOT KNOW EACH OTHER IN 1999?"

And there's that great, low angle shot of him sitting on the floor behind his shoes.
I love that shot of his huge feet so much. Because I'm a dork that way.

I love the idea of Mulder growing up, too! I've got these images of things that I want to write in my mind, many of which toy with the idea of Mulder working on that extra room (that technically can't really exist) and making it more presentable.

But yeah, if they shoot Bernard, then it's not much of an episode, I guess!
Heh, exactly. That's why I pretty much have to turn off the trained part of my brain.

I'm so confused about the desk thing now, looking down in the other comments! I could seriously SWEAR there's another little desk in there (with the computer, like you said)! Don't we see Mulder at it in Anasazi, then Scully, looking at the UFO files? I swear I'm not making this up! D:

ETA: I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT! SCULLY HAS A DESK. \o/ Take that, Morgan & Wong. (Yes, I am that immature about the episode I dislike so much, lol.)

As to caps... I could totally take some tonight, just for fun, and post them here for y'all. How does that sound? ;)

I'll be back to respond properly after work, but for now, I just had to say: she leans against it in THIS VERY EPISODE!

HAHA YES. I knew I wasn't imagining that.

God, sometimes this fandom makes me feel like I'm going crazy, when really they're just not paying attention. (Of course, neither were several of the writers, apparently.)

P.S. (To be clarified later, perhaps after I am also back from work -- with caps! :D) Is this the same photo you're talking about, just moved (in S7) to above the cabinet?

That's a fan photo taken on the set, but it looks like it might be the same one. Aww.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's the same one you can see here! Yay. It's adorable. Also, I will never get tired of the family planning book, EVER.

God, sometimes this fandom makes me feel like I'm going crazy, when really they're just not paying attention.
Sometimes I worry that I'm just trying too hard to protect Mulder and his reputation or something, but then I'm like, NO! I'm just telling it like it is: there is another desk in that office! I have eyes!

many of which toy with the idea of Mulder working on that extra room (that technically can't really exist) and making it more presentable.
What's the impossibility of his bedroom? Is it something about the outside windows? I personally have issues with his bathroom, because in my mind, it's in the opposite corner of his bedroom, which wouldn't work, because then it would, you know...be in the fishtank. But I have a hard time wrapping my brain around where it is. And don't get me started on Scully's crazy-ass house with that weird hallway that circles around or something!

But yeah--I love the whole idea of the evolution of the bedroom, and it's kind of awesome that what got the ball rolling was Morris Fletcher's mirrored waterbed of handcuffs.

OH. AND! I just realized, the last time I watched the Dreamlands, that Fletcher's wearing a "Something Smells Goo-oood" apron when Scully comes over! Buuuut...it's not the same one that Scully wears to do the cat autopsy in S9, which bummed me out when I checked the caps. Fletcher's is white and Scully's is black. Still, let's just pretend it's the same one. Or something.

Anyway! CAPS? YES!

Oh God, me either. It's a PROP that makes me go "Oh, MULDER." What more can one ask for?

I have eyes too, dammit! What drives me nuts is that apparently there was like... a fandom movement to get Scully a desk, back in the day, or something? PAY ATTENTION, DAMMIT. (No, I don't have desk-related fandom issues, why do you ask? LOL)

There's a fic I've always kind of loved that gets a bit meta about it (Zuffy's "Night Song") that addresses the fact that it just couldn't exist in the plan of the building. I'm also pretty sure there are shots that pan across the wall the bedroom door is in, in the earlier years, and it's nothing but wall then. Much like Scully's apartment (and you're right about Mulder's bathroom, too), it's pretty much constantly changing and totally not capable of existing in the space of the building it's a part of, lol. Oh, X-Files.

I didn't notice that about the apron! But hell, at that point, let's just be glad they remembered the thing even existed, regardless of what color it was, lmao.

I'm at work now, of course, but when I get home: there will be caps! How sad is it, on a scale of 1 to 10, that that's something that'll help me get through my shift today? Probably a 12.

I desperately love the props and set dec people! They were the one little bright spot of the Seasons That Must Not Be Named. Of course, I'm hesitant to give 1013 much credit for planning and foresight, but I just can't quite fathom that book just being random space-filler. Am I wrong?

No, I don't have desk-related fandom issues, why do you ask?
HA, well, then I do, too!

It's almost adorable, actually. I mean, maddening, yeah, but I like the idea of it truly existing in some other dimension where magic bedrooms can overlap with other rooms. But the early years are pretty frustrating as far as architecture is concerned! I think there's a S1(?) shot of Mulder's window, and it's a completely different building than they use the rest of the series.

I'm at work now, of course, but when I get home: there will be caps!
Whee!! But on the other hand: stupid time zones making me go to bed!

I don't think you're wrong! It was there throughout S7! I am determined to believe that this means something, even if only in my head.

You're right about the early season shot of Mulder's window (and there's probably more than just one time that this happens). I've been to that building, and they probably shouldn't have picked one with such a clearly rigid structure from the outside, lol. I do love the brick, though.

Well, you'll have something nice to wake up to, then. ;D

Caps, whee! I am back with caps! (Seriously, this cheered me up in such a stupid way this evening. You ever have silly little goals or To Do things that do that for you? Apparently capping pretty does that for me.) In sections, because... I'm geeky and anal that way.

Mulder’s stomach is INSANE. Let's all pause together and look at it for a little while. (Yes, let's!):
On the bank floor; in bed (nice arms, too); in bed again; wandering around (far away and a bit blurry, but still!).

What I think you ladies specifically had in mind when you originally nudged me (AKA, to quote Bender, "Demand suddenly skyrocketed! You all saw it!"):
So maybe this one's for me (I just have a thing for those dimples, okay?); more wandering around; this one's blurry but will no doubt be appreciated; and lastly, nice ass! (My friend K. said it was a bit crazy what got past the censors in this episode, and now that I'm paying attention... she's kind of right. We also joked that we were going to rewatch Monday just to check and see whether it was the female editing team that was responsible for this episode, and I somehow still forget to pay attention for that every time, lmao.)

A few more, just for fun, under the General Cuteness heading:
Okay, maybe not so cute (but wasn't it you I once discussed blood being a pretty visual element with once?); just before my favorite pratfall; huge feet, bigger shoes! (hee, I love that angle); he just looks cuddly here; this face is adorable (KIM D:), he looks like he's going to start arguing with the pan; I just thought this face was adorable (and those eyelashes are nuts); and lastly, sleepy!Mulder (whose freckles I love). Seeing that shot always reminds me of the blooper that cracks me up ("You did that on purpose, you asshole." LOL.)

Is that sufficient enough spamming for y'all? I certainly hope so. ;)

Oh, Zellie, NICE WORK! Your finished site is going to make me all drooly. (Not a word, but you get the picture.)

Hee, according to imdb, it was Louise Innes! Love it. Editing was my least favorite part of production class and it makes me shiver to think about it, buuuut I imagine that it wouldn't have been much of a chore to cut this episode together. I don't think any other (network) show, ever, has had so much casual, gratuitous man skin, and god bless them for that. (I do realize this is a double standard, and that if the episode featured Scully in this situation, scantily clad, I'd be up in arms about it. BUT GUESS WHAT? I DON'T CARE, because look at that dude!)

but wasn't it you I once discussed blood being a pretty visual element with once?
Yes! And while that shot isn't cute, it's pretty amazing. The blood, plus her hand just squashing down on his chest, and her other hand smearing his own blood on his face....

he looks like he's going to start arguing with the pan
I love when he contemplates flipping the pan over to catch the water upside down, and he gets this look on his face, like, "Fuck you, gravity!"

In conclusion....THANK YOU.

Hee, I do! And I'm glad! It'll make it more worthwhile. ;)

Haha, I KNEW it. And yeah, possible double-standard, but whatever. He's HOT. We are not going to complain.

I had an icon once of that scene, had it for ages. The angle and the composition is just so... pretty. Something I noticed while grabbing that cap is that the smear of blood on his cheek comes from her thumb rubbing circles on his skin. I had a stupid little "alakhlhgksjdf" moment about that, then moved on.

I love when he contemplates flipping the pan over to catch the water upside down, and he gets this look on his face, like, "Fuck you, gravity!"
LMAO YES, exactly. I think he makes the face I capped right after realizing why that's a fundamentally bad idea. Oh, Mulder.

You are most welcome! I should do this every time you do recap posts, just for something quick and fun to do.

Whee, I love noticing little things I've never noticed that don't really mean anything, but kind of do! And I've never noticed that. SIGH. I love how still they both are, how that little thumb movement is basically all that's going on. It's kind of endearing to me that there's none of that "DON'T YOU DIE ON ME! STAY WITH ME!" stuff that so many other shows would immediately go to. She doesn't even say anything to him.

Totally! Teamwork makes the dream work. But you're going to spoil me with your pretty caps!

I like that, too! A few other things I noticed were how well DD plays someone who's received a pretty much mortal gunshot wound. People think there's lots of flailing involved, but it pretty much paralyzes you (and numbs the rest of you). He fidgets a bit, clearly in pain, but he looks like he's going to lose consciousness. I kind of love that. It makes you want to go, "No, don't fall asleep, Mulder! D:"

Hee, am I? I really just need to cap more often, frankly. My work for that goddamn site is slower than a tortoise.
