Okay, I had started a nice long comment, in my usual fashion, and then LJ decided to EAT IT, and after about a minute of rage, I realized I'm too tired to try and compose it again. In short: how did I manage to miss this post? I LOVE REDUX 2 SO MUCH IT HURTS MY VERY SOUL. Ahem. So, I'll just... sort of pick up where I left off before LJ decided to be a douche.

Look at how he looks at her. Can you imagine being on the receiving end of a look like that?
I should just point people to this episode, specifically this scene, when I'm trying to explain why Fox Mulder has basically ruined me for men.

Handkissing on this show is hotter than sex.
Handkissing on this show makes me squee like an idiot, too.

I remember gasping out loud the first time I heard that line.
For Mulder, that's kind of the equivalent to being stabbed in the heart (again), isn't it? Goddamn.

And my Lord, Mulder’s FACE. I don’t know, there’s some magical combination of the lighting and something Duchovny did, but he’s never looked more vulnerable and washed clean of any masks. You can see tiny freckles on his skin. His eyes really look like he’s been crying. And he’s so still, and so quiet.
Duchovny's EYES, man. They kind of stare into your soul, don't they? And then in scenes like this, just kind of... rip it to shreds. Jesus.

I love the exterior shot of this diner. It’s gorgeous.
I was beyond depressed to find, during my January Vancouver mecca, that 2-Jays was gone. Seriously.

When she says CSM is her father, Mulder gives this hilarious WTF look.
True story: back when things were getting CRAZY at Haven (basically when news was dry and insane spec about XF2 was running rampant), I made this. I still love it an unhealthy amount.

this line is echoed in the real Samantha’s diary: “I think I had a brother. With brown hair, who used to tease me.”
OH GOD, DON'T QUITE CLOSURE, I'M ALREADY CRYING.

As she’s pulling away from him, he gets this absolutely stricken look on his face, like, “Everyone leaves me because I am the worst person in the world.”
Even though I don't think David's as bad at crying as most people seem to feel (I think his best was probably in Return to Me though, apparently it made the crew cry), I think welling all the emotion up in his eyes without letting it spill over is definitely his strength, by far. That cap you picked KILLS me. And oh, Mulder. WE LOVE YOU.

It's really, really hot when he tells CSM he'll kill him if Scully dies. I believe he will.
"I don't care whose father you are, I will put. you. DOWN." *swoons*

I can picture him just sitting on the floor next to her bed, his cheek pressed against the mattress, all night.
Oh, me too. What else has he got to do at this point? He's got to feel like he's got nothing left at this point.

It’s funny because, well SHEET EATING, but it also kind of works, because HE IS IN THAT MUCH PAIN. Grief is not pretty, people, it's sloppy and unattractive and occasionally ridiculous to the point of laughter.
THANK YOU. I am always trying to express this! As much as I love GA's Single Perfect Tear Roll (really, I do!), this kind of thing will almost always feel more real to me.

More to come, as usual (and to think, this is the abbreviated version!).

“We all have our faith, and mine is in the truth.” I'm crying now, if you were wondering.
Oh, me too. God dammit, this episode.

Seriously, chaste handkisses and talk about integrity. This show does weird things to me.
People who don't get it just... DO NOT GET IT. I'll never understand how, but we know better.

Mulder in rolled-up shirtsleeves. Give me a minute.
Oh, me too. Oh, those forearms.

I personally prefer the young Mulder of "Demons," even though he's not perfect and he only shows up that once. But his gangliness works. This kid's a brick
LMAO how you are making me laugh right now is beyond me. But I totally agree! Demons!young!Mulder was perfect; he had the lips and the nose and the earnest eyes (and yes, he was lanky). Pity they only used him that one time, I loved him.

His weird crying noise/seal bark when he bites his lip actually works for me.
It works for me too (unsurprisingly)! But I just barked out a laugh like you wouldn't believe at your description of it, oh my god.

I have to admit though, I kind of love Unusual Suspects (though not its placement). I am weak for the Gunmen, I can't lie about this.

I could not have said it better. And those people who don't get it...I don't want them to get it. Because if they don't, then they don't deserve to.

It works for me too (unsurprisingly)!
I've seen people make fun of it, but I find it moving. It's like he's SO HAPPY about Scully, but at the same time, he's sort of fighting back this consuming grief about the whole Samantha situation. And he doesn't let it go until he's alone in the hall, while Scully's in there, surrounded by her family. She's been his only family for a long time, but it'll be awhile before he completely becomes hers, if that makes sense.

I think if it hadn't aired after this, I wouldn't mind "Unusual Suspects." I do remember my friends and I getting a lot of play out of the line about tinfoil making an attractive hat and keeping out the government's mind control rays, or whatever it is. But it was just so disappointing to sit down after the high of "Redux II" and be greeted with this.

I just realized, your icon is an almost perfect illustration of how great the casting for young!Mulder from Demons was -- the colors bring it out even more! Random!

Because if they don't, then they don't deserve to.
Word. I don't even care how snobby that sounds; it's something special, dammit.

It's like he's SO HAPPY about Scully, but at the same time, he's sort of fighting back this consuming grief about the whole Samantha situation.
Yes! That moment, for me, is a perfect illustration of too much going on at once; the happiness mixed in with all the sadness and helplessness and confusion, and when you've got that much tumbling around inside you, some of it is just going to literally bubble up out of you, whether you want to or not (but then he literally tries to hold it back).

She's been his only family for a long time, but it'll be awhile before he completely becomes hers, if that makes sense.
Oh, it totally does. As sad as it is how much they lose to get there, I do still love that at the end of the day (and, inevitably, the series), Mulder and Scully really are each other's entire world.

Yeah, the timing is just off. But then the part of my brain that can never, ever shut off behind-the-scenes meta just remains amazed that they were able to pull off shooting S5 and FTF back to back, and I can forgive the slip-ups. I definitely remember it being much more frustrating at the time, though (as much as I love the Gunmen)!

Whoa, you're right! I didn't even mean to.

Hee, I don't care about being snobby, either. I think it's why I really don't push XF on anyone. Sort of a...you find it on your own or you don't find it at all, kind of thing. I'm very protective.

SIGH. So completely unhealthy, but oh so right.

Man, it is crazy when you think about it. To finish S4, shoot the movie, come back and do S5, and still have the story actually make some kind of sense. It's a pretty amazing feat.

I think we all are. It's just such a fierce love, how can we not be?

It is an amazing feat! I'm pretty sure it was something that hadn't ever been done before at the time, and I don't think it's been done since, either. (Partly because it's INSANE, but still... totally awesome.)

BOOOO, LJ.

when I'm trying to explain why Fox Mulder has basically ruined me for men.
I KNOW. I also know, logically, that for most of the series, Mulder is exactly the kind of guy who's not a sensible choice and is "all wrong," but his intentions are always good, no matter how things end up, so I don't even care. Seriously, all guys are measured on a Mulder scale, and that's not really fair to all guys.

I was beyond depressed to find, during my January Vancouver mecca, that 2-Jays was gone. Seriously.
NO! That is tragic. As I was writing this up, I was thinking about how, if I ever make it to Vancouver, I wanted to go there!

I made this. I still love it an unhealthy amount.
HA. I love it.

I think welling all the emotion up in his eyes without letting it spill over is definitely his strength, by far.
Yes, totally. And that's sort of the whole thing with Mulder: all of this emotion that's constantly threatening to brim over, just barely being kept tamped down so he can go through life. I wasn't that moved by Return to Me, though. But "California Son" punched me in the heart.

THANK YOU. I am always trying to express this! As much as I love GA's Single Perfect Tear Roll (really, I do!), this kind of thing will almost always feel more real to me.
Do we ever see Scully sloppy-cry? I don't think we do. I would've appreciated a little of that in 8 and 9. I guess it happened off-screen, like all the other interesting stuff in those seasons. But I have to think it was a choice for the character, because I'm pretty sure GA could bring any kind of crying she wanted. Oh! It's not full-on, but I do love her crying in "DeadAlive," when she has her face on his chest, when she first sees him.

Haha, I know. Most of them don't even realize what they're up against, and that's really not fair at all.

As I was writing this up, I was thinking about how, if I ever make it to Vancouver, I wanted to go there!
I didn't even make it to all the places I wanted to go (I only had about 7 days), but that was one I took the time to seek out (especially since it's in Downtown Vancouver, which was where I was staying). You can still recognize the building -- that red piping is still outside, but it's an insurance company now or something. The security guard in the mall across the street who pointed out the location to me seemed surprised, so it must have been a recent change (at the time). Woe!

And that's sort of the whole thing with Mulder: all of this emotion that's constantly threatening to brim over, just barely being kept tamped down so he can go through life.
Yes, that's exactly it!

I wasn't that moved by Return to Me, though. But "California Son" punched me in the heart.
Oh, most definitely. I was talking more about things made around the era of XF still being produced. Now I think David's stronger than ever as an actor, and California Son punches me in the heart every. time. Oh my goodness.

Do we ever see Scully sloppy-cry? I don't think we do. I would've appreciated a little of that in 8 and 9. I guess it happened off-screen, like all the other interesting stuff in those seasons.
Haha, burn! But yeah, I don't think we do. Like you said, I think the closest we come is that little gasping dry sob she does against Mulder's chest (*cries*) in DeadAlive. Sigh.
