Rewatch Extra: 3x04 Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose

Both Darin Morgan and Peter Boyle won the Emmy for this. Deservedly so.

I love when I love the teaser! This happens so rarely, especially now, when I’m watching episodes I’ve seen a ridiculous number of times.

“What the hell is Lalapalazzo?”

“So what do they say about the entrails?” “Yuck.”

The fake-out is great, when Cline and Havez are talking about ( Read more... )

SRSLY.

Hot nerds are the best.
Totally. And people wonder why they're nearly universally loved!

This is in the running for the funniest line of the whole series. He's just so serious when he says it! Especially the determined, "Let's go."
AHAHA, I KNOW. The law enforcement major in me doesn't want to laugh at my brothers in uniform, but I seriously cannot help it in this case.

“Oooh, I just got a chill down my spine.”
Gets me every time. We rarely hear Mulder THAT sarcastic, but I love it.

“I’m supposed to believe that’s a real name?” Poor Mulder.
I love that he gets shit for it, yet I don't, yet I still love the name. I never thought I'd give my heart to fictional character named Fox, but there you go.

You know, people act like Mulder will believe in anything just because, but he's really something of a St. Thomas, you know? He would absolutely need to stick his hand in those wounds. Just hearing from Bruckman what the gift is like isn't enough. He believes ( ... )

Hi, "Paper Hearts." Only there, Mulder attempts to do what Bruckman can't or won't: use his "vision" to, if not prevent something, then to bring justice to the murdered girls and their families.
SO MUCH LOVE. Seriously, I just... MULDER. He gets to me, you know? Yet another one of the reasons (on my laundry list of about 80,000) as to why I am ridiculously in love with Paper Hearts (and Mulder).

Mulder through the round window. A lovely shot.
One of my favorites. I also love how the entire sequence in the kitchen (both in Bruckman's initial "vision" and when it actually happens later) is edited. And I cannot even tell you how much I love that Puppet comes up from behind Mulder, whether he's prepared or not. I LOVE shit like that. And the pie!

Mulder, on the other hand, seems to view life as an endlessly unfolding Choose Your Own Adventure book, where you have to aggressively look forward and choose and make the world bend to your will. And that makes sense. The event that most shaped him was Samantha's abduction. As a child, how ( ... )

As to Mulder's belief (or non-belief) in God, I've always considered him an Agnostic.
I agree!

I'm so impatient to get through my season 3 eps so I can write and write about "Paper Hearts."

Exactly! He thinks he can change the outcome by turning around to make sure the Puppet isn't behind him, not realizing that that allows the Puppet to...be behind him.

I cannot even tell you how much I love it when you write about Mulder. Seriously, there are no words. But you're so right! And that conversation in Monday is more telling than people give it credit for, I think. As to Mulder's belief (or non-belief) in God, I've always considered him an Agnostic. I also think my favorite quote of his on the subject is, "God just reads the box scores, Scully."Aww, thank you! I feel like there's so much more to say on the subject, and I barely scratched the surface, so I'm ( ... )

I can write about Paper Hearts forever, probably. I have been working on pages of meta about it for months now, and I really want to post about that when I get back from my trip.

I can always find something worthwhile (heh, more like LOTS of somethings!) in your talk about this show! Come on now.

Now that I've been talking about it, I'm nervous that I'm going to watch it and clam up. Like I've been talking this big game and I'll find out I have nothing to say!

Heh, I'm sure you'll have plenty to say. I'd just let whatever comes out, come out. That's how I started my Paper Hearts meta ages ago, and it's now pages long!

Yes, exactly! I was very torn, as I wrote that, about how I felt about him getting shit for it. It's perfect for him, though. Can you imagine if he had some regular name?

(I will argue a bit on the abduction bit, but I realize I'm always in the minority on that one)
It's not like I think he was like "YAY, I KNOW, I'll get myself abducted!" Even though he's being pulled by a force, he plays it like there's a tiny part of him realizing that this is "the big mystery revealed."

Heh, yes. Bruckman is a tease when he wants to be; he's far from serious about everything (and I'm really not sure why so many people assume he is). This also goes a ways to explain why I've never bought into the whole "Scully's immortal" thing. I'm sorry, no.
Exactly. I can't come up with any textual reason for her to be immortal. It doesn't make sense, it doesn't add to a theme or anything. And ultimately ( ... )

Mulder is just... so incredibly unique, he CAN'T have a normal name! Even the name can't be ordinary, somehow. I can only imagine how much shit a kid would get for being named Fox, though. Oh, Mulder. Can you ever catch a break?

Ah, okay. I know some people out there actually think he knew exactly what was happening and willingly, happily walked into it (and I'm like, did you SEE his face?), and just... no. I do think there's a sense of wonder in there, though. Mostly fear, but if there weren't a touch of wonder, he wouldn't be Mulder.

Yeah, that's exactly my point. I mean, I think someone (Frank, probably?) said that Tithonus was sort of meant to hearken back to what Bruckman said (I can see that; she gets shot and should die, yet "You don't."), but ultimately, I can never buy the immortality thing. Not just because I don't think there's enough evidence in canon to support it, but also because of your point; what's the narrative purpose of that?

Really? That's a little crazy. Although unsurprising, because people believe a lot of crazy things. The ship has power over people. Duh? That's clear, right? They can't possibly think ALL of those people just skipped into the light, can they? (Answer: they probably can. I need to stop giving people so much credit.) But yeah, the point I was getting at was that sense of wonder in his face. And how could that not be there? It's been his whole life. So it's the wonder of the truth mixed with the horror of what's actually happening.

I always assumed the pull of the ship was clear! If it wasn't, why would that entire group of people -- all multiple abductees, who should be terrified of such scenarios at this point -- just be standing there, waiting? Come on now.

And how could that not be there? It's been his whole life. So it's the wonder of the truth mixed with the horror of what's actually happening.
Yes, exactly. As much as it would have broken my heart had they truly ended the series there (I don't even know if I could have revisited it afterward, had that been the case), it does have a poetic application in the narrative.
