Melody No. 2 ~ Adjusting

Jul 24, 2010 09:17

[On the surface, the young queen appears more composed than she ever has since her arrival to Mayfield, though the slight bags under her eyes are indicative of much crying and little sleeping. She is currently sitting beneath a tree, running her fingers through the eerily well-kept grass and half-singing, half-humming this melody. She's deep in ( Read more... )

[Have a heavily-scarred shirtless man just strollin' through the park like it ain't no thang. He pauses momentarily at the sound of Garnet's singing.]

[Blushes slightly when she notices the under-dressed gentleman making his way past her, hoping he hadn't overheard her. But he looks so out of place with all his scars and his attire, certainly he couldn't be one of the town's drones, unless he'd been temporarily brainwashed. She decided to take the chance anyway.] Hello...

[Waves casually.]

"Yo."

[Returns his wave, albeit hers is more graceful. She pauses, uncertain, before indulging her curiosity.] The Mayfield drones haven't tried to dress you yet?

Hah. You think I listen to those weirdos?

I suppose you wouldn't. [A smile curves her lips. His devil-may-care attitude reminds her of the members of Tantalus. Perhaps he could be trusted after all.] My name is Garnet. What is yours?

"You can call me 'the Great Jecht.'"

[Thumbs at his chest proudly, grinning.]

"Or just Jecht, for short."

[Smiles politely, intrigued by his introduction.] Is that what they called you, back in your world?... [Continues a little more quietly, voice subdued. Maybe he didn't want to be reminded of home.] You must have done very grand things to earn such a title.

[Just grins widely at that.]

"I was a pretty big deal sports star, back in the day."

Oh, how exciting! [Leans in slightly, now his captive audience.] What did you play?

[Jecht's grin just grows at that, and he puffs up proudly. She's stroking his ego, which is always appreciated. Looks like these two are gonna be good friends!]

"Blitzball. I was the top ace of the Zanarkand Abes, back home."

[The mild-mannered Queen of Alexandria and the most rugged guardian Spira ever saw? Who'd a thunk it?]

Blitzball?.. [She has never heard of it, but by now she is used to hearing of otherworldly things.] How does one play blitzball?

[Well, she did hang out with Amarant, after all.

Jecht, for his own part, crosses his arms and chuckles, shaking his head.]

"Shoulda expected that. Nobody here knows about blitz. Okay, so, there's two teams on opposite sides of the field, which is a big-ass sphere full of water suspended above the ground. The whole game's played underwater like that, so you gotta hold your breath the whole time. Each team tries to carry the ball across the field and kick it into the other team's goal, while the other team tries to tackle the ball away. Whichever team gets the most goals at the end of five minutes wins. It's a fast-paced game that's over quick, but you gotta be in top shape to even play at all. It's a real man's sport."

[And as soon as they got over the "your mother hired me to steal your pendant and kill you and your friends if I felt like it" hurdle, they were thick as thieves~

Garnet listens to Jecht's explanation, chin gracefully propped up by the palms of her hands. She is enraptured by his description of the game and tries very hard to imagine what it must be like to actually watch a blitzball match. It sounds like something Zidane might like to know about, and she makes a mental note to tell him about it later, since there is nothing remotely like it in their world.]

It does sound very physically demanding, but so thrilling! I can't even imagine how many spectators would fill the blitzball arenas.

More than you even count. The stands were overflowing every night, and the whole city lit up all night long for the games.

That sounds incredible, knowing that so many people were there just to watch you play.
