Hermione Granger

Aug 13, 2007 22:16

A long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away), I did this little fic writing exercise where I wrote 50 sentences about Starbuck, the idea being to torture wordy old me into being more precise. Although I'm not too happy with most of the outcome, looking back, I am very happy with a few of them, and I thought it'd be good fun to do the same thing again and see if I've improved any.

Since this is the post Deathly Hallows era, I chose to write about Hermione Granger. The prompts are from 1sentence. Any comments/criticism/whatever would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

01. Comfort

As she sits in her room, reading tales of unnameable evil, Hermione finds it comforting to know that there are always good wizards like Harry Potter to save the day.

02. Kiss

‘Oh!’ she says, when Viktor kisses her for the first time, before running off to consider the situation.

03. Soft

She smothers her tears in Crookshanks’ fur, telling herself that boys aren’t worth being friends with anyway.

04. Pain

‘I’m fine, Ginny,’ she says, the image of Ron and Lavender burning behind her eyes.

05. Potatoes

‘I know how to cook jacket potatoes, Ron!’ she snaps, but he only laughs and asks that she remembers the bezoar when she's done.

06. Rain

Ron’s tears fall into her hair as she sobs against his shoulder, knowing that no amount of grief will ever bring him back.

07. Chocolate

After years spent with dentists for parents, Hermione finds it quite delightful to discover that chocolate can prove useful after all.

08. Happiness

She knows that she shouldn’t be pleased after losing house points, but suddenly she has friends, and that really seems to transcend everything else.

09. Telephone

‘Phone every week!’ her mother tells her, and Hermione hands her a copy of Hogwarts: A History and explains why they will be “owling” instead.

10. Ears

For a wild moment, Hermione wonders what else she could do that would make Ron’s ears turn red.

11. Name

‘V-Voldemort,’ she says, knowing there is no logical reason to avoid it.

12. Sensual

She really shouldn’t be having these sorts of dreams, given the circumstances, and she packs up the tent in the morning without a word to the boy who is to blame.

13. Death

Liquid fire streaks across her chest, and Hermione realises that she will be the one to die tonight.

14. Sex

She asks Tonks about it, purely for research purposes, and the older girl shoots her a mischievous smile before revealing far more about Professor Lupin than she ever wanted to know.

15. Touch

They fall asleep holding hands; the lie of safety somehow feels more believable that way.

16. Weakness

A different Hermione had once feared failing exams, but now her bones ring with the fear of failing a very different test.

17. Tears

She seems to have run out of tears by the time she sees Hagrid holding Harry’s body; she screams and shudders, but her eyes remain frozen, dry.

18. Speed

She runs from the library, her breath sharp in her chest, and asks a Ravenclaw for a mirror as movement sounds around the corner.

19. Wind

Hermione squeezes her eyes shut, trying desperately to ignore the sight of air alone hurtling her towards London.

20. Freedom

There are many whoops of delight after the final exam, but Hermione can’t see how anyone could consider themselves free with results yet to come.

21. Life

Teddy Lupin smiles up at her, and Hermione can’t help wondering who will tell him that his parents gave up their lives so that he would have a chance at his own.

22. Jealousy

‘Want to go to Slughorn’s party with me?’ she asks, and McLaggan smiles.

23. Hands

As she struggles to mend Ron’s wounds with shaking hands, Hermione wishes things were still as simple as a swish and flick.

24. Taste

The idea that Ron might have left because of her terrible cooking only makes her hate him even more, and the tears come harder than ever that night.

25. Devotion

‘It’s just sickening,’ Hermione says, watching Winky and pretending not to see her friends roll their eyes.

26. Forever

‘I love you,’ she whispers, leaning up to kiss him again.

27. Blood

She had become so accustomed to magical injuries leaving no mark that the sight of George is almost too much to bear.

28. Sickness

She catches a cold in January, and the arrival of a setback that is so mundane drags her down into floods of irrational tears.

29. Melody

The Weird Sisters are supposed to be a great group, but Hermione barely hears the music as Viktor twirls her around the dance floor.

30. Star

‘I couldn’t have said it better myself, Miss Granger,’ he says, and Hermione beams.

31. Home

‘Why do you never come home any more?’ her mother asks one day.

32. Confusion

‘But he’s being so ridiculous!’ she says, and Tonks just smiles knowingly

33. Fear

Bellatrix drags her away from the others, claw-like nails digging into her arm, and Hermione finally knows what terror is.

34. Lightning

She stares at the boy from across the room, trying to see his scar and wondering what his life must have been like, but it seems rather rude to ask.

35. Bonds

If she knows one thing, it's that Harry is not going to leave her behind.

36. Market

Experience might have changed many of her thoughts about the magical world, but she never did lose that strange little thrill every time she walked into Flourish and Blotts.

37. Technology

‘It’s called a computer, Ron,’ she explains patiently, on his first visit to her parents’ house.

38. Gift

The perfume smells rather foul, but Hermione can’t help grinning.

39. Smile

Luna smiles vaguely at her, and Hermione is torn over whether she should keep insisting for reason.

40. Innocence

She jumps through the trapdoor, the air catching her robes as she falls, and she can’t help feeling a rush of excitement rise up through the fear.

41. Completion

She’s thrown aside the Basilisk fangs and is kissing him before she realises what she is doing, and although no music swells and the ground does not tremble beneath her feet, she cannot imagine a more perfect moment.

42. Clouds

As the dragon soars even higher, Hermione can’t help wondering how she always ends up in these messes.

43. Sky

The Dark Mark glitters high above the tower, and Hermione’s stomach churns.

44. Heaven

‘Marry me,’ he says.

45. Hell

Fenrir Greyback eyes watch her hungrily, and she knows that there’s no chance of this ending quietly.

46. Sun

The sun rises over Hogwarts, and Hermione doesn’t quite know who to mourn first.

47. Moon

‘He’s a werewolf,’ she realises, but the discovery is dampened by the fact that she has no one to share it with.

48. Waves

Her parents are waiting on Platform Nine and Three Quarters, smiling and waving, and Hermione realises with a jolt that she’s spent another year experiencing things that they can never know.

49. Hair

She spends ages smoothing out her hair for the wedding, but as they dance, Ron whispers in her ear that he prefers it bushy anyway.

50. Believe

‘We’re going to get through this,’ she says, not entirely sure who she is trying to convince.
