Dear livejournal, purerave, other internet blogging forums, and other means of communication. I would like to ask a question of you. If you don't mind. Maybe it is more of an observation than a question, but it applies to many of your users, some of them are my friends or family, others just internet acquaintances, and a few randoms that I don't know how I came to be their "friend", "buddy" etc.

Why are there so many entry sequences that go somewhere along the lines of this:

I/We am/are so broke, i/we may not even be able to make rent payments this month. This sucks. etc. etc. etc...

I/We just got my/our (insert expensive item/ticket/prostitutes name, here). This is so awesome.

and again

January 16, 2005

I/We am/are so broke. Why is everything in life so expensive?

How does this make sense. I see/hear/read it everywhere. Friends, family, strangers etc. It boggles my mind. I just don't see the common sense factor here. I mean, I like going places, buying expensive items(my new car for example) and all that. But I make sure it is a financially sound idea before jumping into it. I wouldn't have committed myself to $620 a month going to car payment and insurance if I couldn't do it.

I guess it isn't so much that I can't understand it, but it is the fact that people make posts/emails/conversations that follow the pattern above so frequently. If you are going to complain that you are broke all the time, then don't follow it up by boasting about your new expensive endeavor. It is sickening, and the lack of common sense is a bit scary actually.

And before someone jumps in and says "oh, well you just don't understand what it's like..." I have been there, and been in that situation where every purchase is done by thinking "can I afford this?" And I didn't get out of that situation by buying expensive shit.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are needs that people have. And sometimes paying a bit more is worth it in regards to the quality and "lifespan" of purchased items. For example, buying a pair of nice tennis shoes for $50-100 that will last you a year vs. buying a pair of $12 tennis shoes that are held together with bubblegum and homeless guy jizz. But buying outrageously priced unnecessary items/trips/hookers/drugs/slaves etc. just makes no sense if you are hard for cash.

So please, for my sake and the sake of others, if you are going to talk about your brand new expensive item/trip/car/whore/heroin addiction don't precede or follow it with a bunch of bullshit about being broke. If you can afford that shit than you obviously aren't as poor as you are leading on to be. Or maybe you are, but you just don't see the obvious way out of your situation. Either way it is troubling.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Stefan Millea
