For those brave souls who went to charge what was thought to be insurmountable odds to breach the Atlantic Wall and begin the end of Hitler's Thousand Year Reich, today I remember you all. Not for the millions of people you helped to liberate. Not for bringing the world from the brink of tyranny, oppression, and persecution. But for people like my neighbor Julie, who lost a brother in July, 1944 after having been wounded storming the beaches of Normandy. I respect and salute the fallen. The wounded. And the living.
Though people have forgotten. Though the media refuses to cover it in any detail. And though websites like Google, who put up an icon for stupid events like this "missing link" nonsense but not for either Memorial Day or D-Day. I have not. Every breath I take, every moment I live, I have because of people who willingly and knowingly went into battle to defend liberty and end evil.
Thank you.
June 6th, 1944 - June 6th, 2009. 65 years of sacrifice.
