My aunt, uncle, and cousins are up from PA for a few days. On Saturday we had a lovely fire at our house, complete with toasted marshmallows. In the course of the evening, one of my cousins said "Daddy! We need more chairs from the car." Kinda off-handedly I asked why she couldn't get them herself. Her answer?
"Boys do the carrying."
Now, this is a very intelligent young woman. She's got ideas and plans for her life, is very driven. She's graduating early from high school so she can start college. She works at a health club, and we talked for quite a while about her physical training.
And yet when I suggested that maybe she might not need to depend on a boy to carry things for her, she got all dreamy eyed and said, "Oh, no, I will. Someday, I hope."
I hope I was able to hide the nausea.
