Bleeding Sepia [V]

So! We're back! Still not sure where the hell this thing is going, but it's gaining momentum again. (I hope!) Er, this piece follows on from the very first, I think. Wah, but I feel so guilty! The last time I wrote for this was in July, and now I feel kind of obligated to get the bastard finished as soon as I can.

Fortunately, it's fun to write.

Confused? Think how I feel!

For a long, frozen moment, no one moves. Benjamin exhales, breath clouding in the cool air. They had all forgotten just how fast Peter was, or maybe they never really knew. There's so much about him that they never knew. So much that he never told them. He was all secrets.

Gabriel's eyes drift, tracking a group of young women as they stumble down the street. In his eyes, they look bright as fireflies, slim bodies glowing with yellow and white heat, and the pulse of their blood. He licks his lips unconsciously, bringing one hand up to touch the side of his own neck. Benjamin looks at him scornfully, nose wrinkling slightly. The sudden click is sinfully loud.

Hayley points the gun unwaveringly at Patrick. It's trained on his forehead. Her face is blank, her eyes like those of a china doll. She looks like a doll, petite and perfect but for her hair, shorn raggedly short. It looks like fire, framing her face in jagged strands. "It was all your fault." She sounds perfectly calm, fingers steady on the trigger as she stares in Patrick's eyes. "You were the one who listened to him. You made him think he was a king. That he could do whatever he liked. He thought he was invincible." She pauses, exhales, inhales again. "He loved you. Kill you, I hurt him. Kill you, he knows that I mean it. I should kill you."

Alexander shifts beside her, pulling back for a better view. His breathing is thick and ragged, and his good eye is fixed on Hayley. When he speaks, his voice is half-choked, trapped in the ruin of his throat. "If we kill him, we loose Peter." Hayley doesn't acknowledge him, but Benjamin's eyes flick up to his. "Without Patrick, there is nothing to keep him bound to this city. If he leaves her, we will never find him again. He will go to ground, hide away somewhere far from civilization until we are all dust, and then come crawling back out."

Hayley lowers the gun, inch by inch, until the muzzle points at the ground. Her face is still the same, still that of a twisted doll. "As you wish." Her voice is sharp, mocking. "I leave him alive then." She moves, suddenly, serpentine, the blunt muzzle of the gun catching Patrick across the face. He sprawls, one cheek a mess of flesh and bone as blood flies from the tip of the gun. Gabriel doesn't blink as the blood hits his face, just licks it from his lips with a half-smile.

She turns on her heel and vanishes into the night.

(Somewhere, half a city away, Peter crouches in a tunnel. He snarls, faces twisted and brown eyes alight with rage. One day, he promises, one day I will do for you what I did for Brian, but I will tear your face away with a smile on my own. Blood drips down from his mouth, and dapples the puddle at his feet. The red ripples spread out, and the darken the reflection of the moon.)

I really don't like vampire!Hayley. She slightly terrifies me, actually, which is not good. However, vampire!Vicky I do like. Probably too much, tbh.

Oh well.

Opinions?
