Lily decided that the next time James Potter asked if she was busy, she was going to say, yes, indubitably, she was.

"Step lively, Evans!" he called from ahead of her. "Places to go, mayhem to see to."

She followed him deeper into the forbidden depths of the dungeons, to the spot where he and his idiot friends had formed an untidy circle.

Crouching down, James bobbed his head from side to side, cracking his neck. He tapped the floor three times with his wand and said, "Openway Esamesay."

"Oh, you've got to be kidding," Lily exclaimed.

"Yes, actually." James grinned up at her. "Very good, Evans. I knew you couldn't be entirely humorless."

Lily glowered.

He tapped the floor again and, this time, said, "Marauders, plus one."

A square glowed white on the dirty floor of the dungeons. It burned painfully brightly for a moment before snuffing out, leaving a pitch black opening in its stead.

Standing up, James nodded towards his handiwork and said, "Ladies first."

"Now you really are kidding," Lily said, flatly. "I can't go...there." She gestured uncertainly at the seemingly bottomless black hole.

James, leaning toward her, lifted an eyebrow. "Why can't you? You don't even know where there is."

Lily huffed indignantly. "Because...because there are rules. And rules are made for a reason." She pointed her index finger at him when he opened his mouth to speak again. "And don't you dare say that they're made to be broken."

"Why shouldn't he?" Sirius spoke, his voice softly sweet in the way he enticed other girls to do his Arithmancy lessons. "When everything's made to be broken, why should the rules be exempt?"

Lily snorted out through her nose. "Everything's made to be broken...? What rubbish! You sound as though you've been reading the tripe in the fiction section of Witches' Mercury."

"Witches' Mercury!" Sirius feigned horror. "You cut me, Lily, to the quick. Your cruelty has stolen my will to live -- goodbye, cruel girl!"

Hands clasped over his chest and feet firmly together, Sirius jumped, disappearing into the blackness.

Lily briefly considered screaming for help.

The boys, however, were thoroughly amused. Peter giggled like mad as he followed Sirius into the abyss. Lily looked to Remus; he could occasionally be found to have some smidgeon of good sense. This time, though, he shrugged, smiled apologetically and followed Sirius and Peter.

James looked to Lily. She folded her arms across her chest and shook her head.

"C'mon, Evans," he said. "Live a little."

Lily was indignant. "One does not have to constantly make a right Charlie of oneself in order to live, and, furthermore..."

"Yoo-hoo, young lovers!" Sirius, in a mocking falsetto, interrupted from the darkness below. "Let us away, for the night grows old whilst thou doest bicker like quintapeds over a tasty baby."

James shrugged at Lily and smiled charmingly. Stepping backwards, never taking his eyes from hers, he dropped into the hole.

"Ackassjay," Lily muttered and followed.
