Wow. Just...wow.
I am amazed and hopeful with the outcome of this election, but at the same time, like several of my friends, I am sad about Arizona and Florida and (maybe) California. Gay people should have the right to marry and adopt or foster children. How does it hurt others to allow that to happen? It's like when interracial marriage was outlawed. How did that hurt others?
But I'm also happy about Colorado and South Dakota. I believe that women should always have the right to choose. Even if they choose not to get an abortion, to carry to term, they should still have the ability to make that decision for themselves. No one but the woman should be able to make that choice. The bigger priority here should be preventing unwanted pregnancies in the first place. Abortion rates will go down if men and women are properly taught how not to get pregnant in the first place. Abstinence-only isn't working.
And I'm sad about how divided this country is going to be for a while. There are some seriously angry people over the result of this election. And that is just too bad. I would like to think that we're way past Reconstruction, that we're way past such distrust and racism, but we're not. We're really not. I can only hope that it will continue to get better.
My nerves, however, are assuaged for now. Mostly. The political process does still work, and that gives me hope.
